Nagano Snowscape in January
Nagano Snowscape in January
Season: Deep Winter
In Brief: The Coldest & Snowiest Month

In January, Nagano's bitingly cold climate brings ample powdery snow, benefiting the local ski resorts. The downtown areas and ancient onsen towns are serene and less crowded due to the cold, offering a peaceful winter ambiance.

Temperature

Avg. Temperature Range: -7~0℃/20~33℉

In January, the temperatures in Nagano plummet to levels that can numb exposed skin without adequate thermal protection. During the daytime, temperatures hover between 0°C (32°F) and 5°C (41°F), while at night, they drop to between -1°C (30°F) and -5°C (23°F). Strong winds can roll snow up to form an icy mist that adds the chill at high elevations, such as the Shiga Plateau. All you want is a warm onsen to sweep away the coldness.

Precipitation

Snowfall: 980mm

Avg. Snowy Days: 23

In January, Nagano experiences nearly daily snowfall, with large flakes quickly covering the ground. The closer you get to the mountains, the heavier the snow accumulates. By sunrise, the thick snow piles up to adult height, resembling soft, pink marshmallows that gleam in the early light.

Sunrise & Sunset

In Nagano, the sun rises between 6:49 and 6:59 and sets between 16:42 and 17:11, providing approximately 10 hours of daylight. However, because of the bitter cold in the early mornings, tourists generally have only 8 to 9 hours of comfortable time for outings, making it essential to plan an efficient schedule.

Packing List

Upper Body

Consider knee-length down jackets or windproof coats with thermal linings. A down vest adds extra warmth. As a base layer, choose a wool or cotton shirt for comfort.

Bottoms

Fleece jeans or leggings offer warmth and coziness, and ski pants provide warmth and practicality for navigating deep snow.

Shoes

For January's deep snow in Nagano, opt for high-top, waterproof snow or mountain boots paired with thick cotton or wool socks for warmth. Non-slip crampons are essential for safe navigation on icy ground, particularly at attractions with numerous steps and slopes.

Accessories

Wear windproof gloves with a screen-compatible layer to keep your hands warm and operational. Also, use goggles and a face mask to shield your eyes and face from cold winds and the glare of bright snow.

Tips

1. In January, Nagano's mountainous regions require cautious driving due to snow, so plan extra time for safe travel and avoid itinerary delays.

2. In Nagano's chilly January, engaging in outdoor snow sports demands more energy than usual due to the increased intensity compared to dry ground activities. Therefore, it’s crucial to pace yourself and rest well after sports to avoid overexertion.

3. Dress appropriately but not excessively warmly, as your body will warm up during activities. The key is to ensure your clothing and footwear are waterproof and windproof, especially when taking photos or waiting in lines outdoors, where clothes can easily get soaked by snow and winds can be fierce.
