Being the inspiration for the picturesque Pandora Planet in the sci-fi blockbuster ‘Avatar’, Zhangjiajie enjoys great popularity worldwide. Countless movie fans and travel enthusiasts come here especially for the eponymous Hallelujah Mountain in the film, a unique karst stone pillar nestled right in Yuanjiajie Scenic Area in the most celebrated Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Inside the Park, there are many other star sights as well, including the out-of-print Natural Great Wall in Yangjiajie Scenic Area, Tianzi Mountain, known as the ‘King of the Peak Forest’, and the hiking paradise Golden Whip Stream, which flows through one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. Besides, the thrilling Glass Bridge in the Grand Canyon and mysterious Tianmen Mountain (Heaven’s Gate) are also must-visit sites for a Zhangjiajie tour package.
How many days should I spend in Zhangjiajie? Can I do Zhangjiajie in one day?
It is impossible to visit all of Zhangjiajie in 1 day, and 3 to 5 days is a general travel time span. If you only have 1 day, then mainly visit the Forest Park to witness the Avatar-filmed Hallelujah Mountain, and our mini group tour is highly recommended. For a 3-day Zhangjiajie tour, include Grand Canyon with Glass Bridge and Tianmen Mountain, and even Yellow Dragon Cave and Suoxiyu Scenic Area in your itinerary as well. 4 to 5 days are enough to extend your trip to ancient towns of Furong and Fenghuang, the prototypes of stunning night views of water towns that you might have seen online. We also offer longer customizable group or private China tours to well-known destinations, including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, and Zhangjiajie. Welcome to contact our travel consultants for the latest recommendations.
Where should I stay in Zhangjiajie, downtown or Wulingyuan?
It depends on the area you are going to visit. If it is the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the Grand Canyon, it is recommended that you book the hotel around the East Gate of the Park in Wulingyuan District, and the 4-star Expert Village Courtyard Hotel or 5-star Pullman Zhangjiajie Hotel is the most common decent choice. To explore the Tianmen Mountain (Heaven’s Gate Mountain) and the 72 Tujia Stilted Buildings, or to employ transport conveniently after the trip, it’s better to make your hotel reservation in downtown. The 4-star Home2 Suites by Hilton Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain or 5-star Wyndham Garden Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain, which have received wide acclaim from our guests, can serve as your main reference.
When is the best time to visit? And how to dress?
Zhangjiajie is suitable for travel all year round and can offer you different stunning sceneries, but the best months are April to June and September to November due to the mild climate with little rain. Thin long sleeves and casual pants are recommended, and remember to bring a coat to add or remove at any time to cope with temperature changes. Comfortable sports shoes, sunscreen cream, and sunglasses should be prepared. In the coldest month of January, it is better to wear a down jacket or fur coat, along with gloves, a hat, and a scarf. Consider lightweight and breathable clothes like skirts and shorts during the hottest time of July.
Is Zhangjiajie safe for tourists? Is it suitable for the elderly?
It is very safe in Zhangjiajie, in terms of both social security and hiking. The parks and mountains here are not a big challenge for the elderly, as facilities like elevators, cable cars, small sightseeing trains, and even sedan chairs are well-equipped in these places. However, if you are over 65 or have poor knee health, it is still necessary to fully assess your physical condition before you go, because Zhangjiajie tours do involve a lot of walking. The 3-hour light hike along Gold Whip Stream, featuring a flat and gentle path with almost no elevation gain, is suitable for people with moderate physical strength.
