Overview of the Chitragupta Temple
Built in the early years of the 11th century, the Chitragupta Temple, Khajuraho is an architectural marvel. An epigraph mentions the temple was probably completed around 23rd February 1023 CE. The epigraph even mentions that the temple was consecrated on the occasion of Shivratri. Bharatji temple’s architecture is similar to the nearby Jagadambi temple; the given shrine is somewhat smaller in size.Dedicated to the Sun God, the temple walls are decorated with beautiful sculptures of celestial nymphs, elephants, and images of mundane life during those times. The inner sanctum, the seven-horse figurines could be seen pulling a Sun’s chariot – the mythological representation of Surya in the Hindu mythology. Apart from that the grand Vishnu statue, with its eleven heads, could be seen standing tall in the southern end of the temple. It houses some of the most talked-about erotic sculptures of the Khajuraho, like couples engaged in mithuna (the act of lovemaking), or celestial nymphs awaiting their lovers.

Built on a raised platform, the temple has a maha-mandapa or the main hall, an entrance porch, long vestibule, a circumambulation path, and a sanctum sanctorum. Inside the temple premise, lies the mutilated statue of the primary deity (Surya or Sun) sitting on a chariot with seven horses. Surya could be seen dressed up in his boot and armored clothing. Apart from that, you can find smaller figurines representing the Sun standing at the ornate doorstep of the shrine.
As you enter the temple, you can find the main hall with an elaborately carved octagonal ceiling, similar to the Jagadambi Temple. Apart from that, the temple has two balconies leading to the roof.
Sculptures of the Temple
The Chitragupta Temple, Khajuraho is home to some of the most sensuous sculptures. However, that is not the only thing one can find in this temple. Apart from the erotic sculptures, the temple has an almost two-meter long statue of Sun sitting on his chariot drawn by seven horses holding a beautifully carved lotus flower.The columnar pillars of the temple are decorated with panels of sculptures, engaged in sensuous poses. Surasundari figurines on the outer walls of the shrine represent women endowed with celestial beauty and grace. Take some time to notice, the detailing done of these figurines. The sculptors have given special attention to the subjects and other finer points like loose strands of hair flowing freely, ornaments the lady is wearing, or the crevices on the clothes are showcased in detail.

Apart from that, the figures of Shiva and Brahma could be seen here. The eleven headed statue of Vishnu, in the southern wall of the temple, is especially eye-catching. Vishnu sculpture showcases the deity in his supreme form or the Para Rupa.
