Hazara Rama Temple is in Hampi an ancient village in Karnataka, India. The town is famous for its architectural beauty in the form of temples and complexes. Hazara Rama Temple is one of such magnificent attraction in Hampi, a charming town near Hospet.

Introduction

Hazara Rama Temple contains the historical ruins of Vijayanagara Empire and is a central attraction of tourists located at the center of the high area. The temple is dedicated to a Hindu deity Lord Rama. It is famous for its intricate carvings that elaborate scenes in the Ramayana (Hindu epic on Lord Rama). The entire temple is a complete piece of splendid artwork and decorated with thousands of carvings. These thousands of carvings gave name to the temple ‘Hazara Rama,’ i.e. ‘Thousand Rama’.

In the past, the temple has three idols of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshamana as a primary deity. But now, these idols are missing from the temple. Along with captivating architecture, this destination is famous for photography enthusiasts too.

History of Hazara Rama Temple

Vijayanagara royals had built this temple in the 16th century and dedicate this temple to Lord Rama. As per medieval historical records, it is said that Devaraya I, the king of Vijayanagara Empire, expressed his wish to build one grand temple as an hour to Lord Rama. So, the temple construction began in 1513 AD. In ancient time, only the king and royal family members of Vijayanagara Empire were allowed to visit the temple and worshipped idols. Later on, it became open for all citizens.

The Architectural Structure of Hazara Rama Temple

The temple is a shrine of Hampi that has dazzling frescos and engraved carvings. And that makes the temple one of architectural heritages of India.

Hazara Rama Temple is the only temple in Hampi which has sculptured compound wall. The entire temple complex is enclosed by the high compound walls and has a grand entrance at east. It has a tall structure overlooked with the lawn that gives the magnificent presence of splendid architecture, which has a traditional touch of Vijayanagara Dynasty. The temple has an east-facing entrance, and a lush green lawn surrounds it. Also, the entire temple has a flat-roof. The structure is made up of granite, and it has integrated carvings on each part of the temple. These carvings portray exciting events from Ramayana.

Glorious Interior

After entering the temple, you can visit the entertainment hall, which is known as Rangamandapa. Inner walls of the temple are sculptured with historical events in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Also, four tall granite pillars in the hall is made up of Hoysala style. These pillars are engraved with numerous idols of Gods and Goddesses. The ceiling of this hall is designed with the purpose of ventilation. The roof ventilates fumes and smoke and makes the atmosphere fresh. Entertainment hall has three different entrances at the west, north and south that open up three sides of the complex.

Wonderful Exterior

Along with the splendid interior, the temple has a stunning exterior too. External walls of the temple are embellished with horizontal panels and sculptured with horses, elephants, cultural events like Dasara, famous stories in Ramayana, etc. In the northern part of the inner sanctum, there is another small temple dedicated to the goddess Sita.  Also, the temple has one more miniature shrine that depicts Vishnu avatars, i.e. incarnation of Lord Vishnu with friezes.
