National Gandhi Museum, Delhi
National Gandhi Museum was once called “Gandhi Memorial Museum” and “Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya”, now commonly known as “National Gandhi Museum” or “Rashtriya Gandhi Sangrahalaya”. The National Gandhi Museum, located 300m southwest of Raj Ghat and close to Gandhi's former residence, is a great place to learn about Gandhi's life story. Built in 1958-1963, the Gandhi Memorial Museum contains a large collection of letters, photographs, manuscripts, books, voice records, etc. The museum is simple in material, without the use of glass and other modern materials. And the glass cabinet in the middle of the room displays the thick white cloth worn by Gandhi on his deathbed, and the remaining blood is impressive.Architectural feature of National Gandhi Museum
The architect of National Gandhi Museum is Charles Correa. As a complement to Gandhi's former home, the museum expresses Gandhi's ideas in spatial form. The memorial's materials, such as simple brick walls, tiled roofs, stone floors and wooden doors and windows, are the same as the former residence. The only difference is that the RCC channel, which acts as both a building beam and a groove in the drain. The entire group of buildings does not use glass and other modern materials, and lighting and ventilation can be provided by many movable wood louvers.The Gandhi memorial museum is laid out like a village around a water house. Open and enclosed space units give order to the environment with a Mandala-like square structure. Stretching horizontal lines, flexible floor layout, interspersed penetration of indoor and outdoor spaces, and concern for climate factors make this museum a masterpiece of the middle of 21st century.
National Gandhi Museum History
On the January 30, 1948, after Gandhi discussed his work with his subordinates in his room, he walked along the front path to the lawn in the middle of the yard, and carried out propaganda of nonviolent and non-cooperative movement. But an extremist suddenly appeared and assassinated him. So people built a small white pavilion in the assassination spot. Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life in a room that maintained the way he lived before he died. Here we can see a generation of Indian father's simple bags. His meager wealth is nothing more than a spinning wheel, a pair of slippers, a pair of glasses and a walking stick.
