Nikko’s weather in November becomes cold, with the average temperature hovering between 1-10°C (34-50°F). For your information, the temperature of Tokyo averages about 12-16°C (54-61°F), which is much higher than Nikko. 

Thanks to the plenty of sunny days, walking outdoor is not as miserable as you think. During mid-day, the highest temperature can reach 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit), and you might even feel a bit warm. 

However, rain and snow may occur from time to time, intensifying the cold feelings. The temperature on snowy days remains around -3-8 degrees Celsius (27-46 degrees Fahrenheit). Plus, it is possible for temperatures to remain below freezing throughout the entire day. Therefore, it’s always helpful for visitors to check the forecast and wear proper clothes.

Absolutely! November is one of the best times to visit Nikko. 

Although Nikko’s climate in November is a bit cold, basking in the abundant sunshine and crisp air makes various travel activities quite pleasant. Plus, early November is the final chance to catch the fall foliage view in Nikko. Compared with the overcrowding and expensive situation in Kyoto, Nikko obviously provides a quieter and cheaper travel environment. 

What to Wear in Nikko in November

 Upper Clothing: A thick sweater paired with a wind-proof jacket is a perfect match for outdoor explorations. A thermal underwear is highly recommended if you plan to explore the mountain area, where temperatures can be much lower.  

 Bottom Clothing: It’s a good idea to wear lined trousers or hiking pants to keep flexible and warm. Girls can also wear long dresses with fleece-lined leggings, which are comfortable and stylish. 

 Footwear: A pair of non-slip hiking shoes is your best option to spend a long but effortless day. 

 Accessories: 
Gloves, scarves and warm hats are necessary winter gadgets to keep warm.

3. On the 1st and 2nd of November, 2025, Nikko will host a light-up event illuminating its UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Toshogu Shrine and Futaransan Shrine. When the night approaches, visitors can enjoy a fantastic night view, with additional performances. Moreover, you won’t see annoying crowds like in the daytime.
