Okinawa sees plenty of rainfall in June, with the average precipitation of 247 mm across 11 rainy days. Showers usually come as sudden downpours, followed by bursts of sunshine and blue skies, which is surprisingly suitable for outdoor activities. But occasionally, a whole day can be gray or rainy, when indoor attractions like Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and Okinawa Museum & Art Museum are a safe bet.

In general, Okinawa’s rainy season lasts until late June, a month earlier than on mainland Japan. But it isn’t always punctual. For example, in 2025, it wrapped up early on June 7th. Once the rainy season is over, sunny days return, making visitors feel comfortable during the trip.

However, you need to notice that it is possible for typhoons to occur in June. Thus, don’t forget to check the forecast in advance.

Most Humid Month

June is the most humid month of the year, with an average humidity level of around 84%. You would experience stretches of sticky and uncomfortable weather. To cope with it, keep outdoor activities relatively relaxed, take breaks usually, and drink plenty of water.

The good news? Once the rainy season ends, the air dries out a little, and the muggy feeling eases. That’s when Okinawa truly shifts into its lively summer high season.

Sea Water Temperature

June in Okinawa is one of the best months to enjoy water activities, with warm sea temperatures of around 27 degrees Celsius (81 degrees Fahrenheit), which is warm enough that you don’t have to wear a wetsuit for snorkeling or diving. But keep in mind that once you are back on shore, a breeze might make you feel a little chilly, so a tower or light cover-up will come in handy.

Sunshine Hours & Daytime Hours

Sunshine Hours: about 6 hours
Sunrise: 5:36-5:40
Sunset: 19:21-19:25
Daytime Hours: 13 hours 40 minutes - 13 hours 47 minutes

Although June experiences the rainy season, you’ll still enjoy a fair amount of sunshine. And ultraviolet rays are quite strong, with the UV index as high as 11, so sun protection is absolutely essential. Otherwise, your skin might get sunburned.

Okinawa also has the longest daytime hours, at least 13.5 hours. Considering the scattering attractions in Okinawa, extended daylight time gives more flexibility to your travel plan, and you can have a more relaxing holiday experience.

Is June a Good Time to Visit Okinawa?

Yes, June is a relatively nice month to visit Okinawa.

Firstly, the rainy season in Okinawa has a limited influence on your visit. Sometimes the scenery looks even better after the rain. June is also less crowded and more budget-friendly than peak summer – July and August.

Secondly, there are various activities that you can take part in this month, including hydrangea flower appreciation, exciting underwater activities and Haarii Festival celebration.

Travel Highlights and Tips

1. Hydrangea Blossom Appreciation

June is the peak season for watching hydrangea flowers in Okinawa. Therefore, don’t forget to spare one day to visit Hydrangea Garden Yohena, the middle part of Okinawa. There are around 10,000 hydrangea flowers in their full bloom, which is perfect for a casual stroll and brilliant photography. Besides, there is a small café for you to have a rest.

Tip: The exact time when hydrangea flowers are in full bloom somehow depends on the weather and varies a bit from year to year, so make sure to check relevant information in advance.

2. Haarii Celebration across Okinawa

The Haarii Festival, held on the 4th day of the 5th lunar month – June 18 in 2026, is one of Okinawa’s most important cultural events. Celebrations take place across both the main island and remote islands, featuring dragon boat races to pray for safety at sea and harvests. Some regions also host evening fireworks, adding a festive moment to the night.

Tip: Schedules vary by location, so check local event information in advance.

3. Water Activities

June is one of the best months for ocean adventures in Okinawa. The water temperature is ideal, and crowds are relatively light, meaning a more enjoyable experience. You can go snorkeling to encounter sea turtles and manta rays, or try exciting jet skis and banana boats. Prefer something calmer? Fishing is also a lovely option.

Tips:
1. June is also peak jellyfish season. It’s best to choose beaches equipped with protective nets.
2. Okinawa’s beaches can be relatively coarse, and sometimes are covered with sea urchins and other marine animals. So never walk on the beach barefoot.
