1. Shirakawa-go

Hiking in Takayama
Hiking in Kamikochi
Shirakawa-go is famous for the snow-covered scenery in winter, but it’s also stunning in summer. The unique traditional houses stand there, and everything is vibrant. It’s interesting to see rural Japan with your own eyes, as the little village backed by mountains is beautiful beyond your imagination with rice fields. It is wonderful to return to nature at the summer retreat in July.

2. Kamikochi Hiking

Kamikochi is the most popular hiking destination near Takayama, and it’s great to escape the summer heat as in North Japan Alps. It is easy to trek along the river valley, to explore the nature of Japan. It is like an unexploited land with clear water, rolling mountains, and lovely flora and fauna. It’s cooler in Kamikochi, so you can add one more piece of clothes like a thick jacket.

3. Hida Furukawa

Taking JR trains northwards to Hida-Furukawa Station in about 16 minutes, you’ll get to a small ancient town Hida Furrukawa not far away from the Takayama downtown. You can enjoy a slow life in the pleasantly cool weather, to roam along the river and sit for a coffee. If interested, you can also admire the old houses in the town, which is a masterpiece of wooden architecture.

Travelling Tips:

When it is raining heavily, don’t venture to go hiking or challenge mountains. It’s not advised to go to Shirakawa-go as well in such a bad weather, when the village would get stuck in the mist.
