Patwon Ki Haveli

Jaisalmer is the jewel of the state which is known as ‘the golden city’ which has a crown of ‘Jaisalmer Fort’ and ‘Patwon ki haveli’. ‘Patwon ki Haveli’ is a dazzling piece of architecture in the Jaisalmer. This mansion built by the rich and established trader Guman Chand Patwa. Construction of this mansion has started in the year 1800 and it took almost around 60 years to complete this construction. After Guman Chand Patwa, his grandson held the liability of mansion and completed the building in 1860. Now, Patwon Ki Haveli is under the Indian government possession. And part of the Haveli has owned by one businessman named as Kothari.

The Story behind the Mansion:

‘Patwa’ is a traditional professional in the Rajasthan. In the jewellery-making business, silver and golden thread weaver is known as ‘Patwa’.

In the earliest time 19th century, a wealthy trader ‘Guman Chand Patwa’ was doing a business of golden and silver threads. Those threads were used to craft embroideries on the traditional Rajasthani attire. This trader wanted to build the royal mansion for his family next to the royal fort. The king didn’t allow Guman Chand Patwa to construct the palace beside fort but offered him a narrow lane at another part of the city.

This lavish mansion is a combination of 5 different haveli’s that had made for Guman Chand Patwa’s five children. Construction of the first haveli among five has completed in the year of 1805 and in 1860 it emerged as very first haveli in the land of golden city-Jaisalmer.

Architecture:

Patwon Ki Haveli has an entrance of the narrow lane. By walking on the road, you can see the number of balconies, windows and ornate carvings at first glance. It gives you an idea what a stunning architecture you are going to witness in a minute!

The entire architecture of haveli looks like a single construction from outside. But after visiting the interior, you will know it is an agglomeration of 5 havelies. Significant development of the haveli is made up of yellow sandstone that has imported from the nearest village to Jaisalmer and gates had given a brown color to make it attractive. The entire golden architecture of haveli has crafted with multiple jewellery designs used by the Indian women for adornment. E.g. massive pillars at the frontier side has sculptured in the form of ‘zhumki,’ i.e. earrings. This ornate architecture has over 60 balconies, wall paintings, gateways, arches, mirror decoration on walls, miniature work on ceiling and pillars that features traditional art of Jaisalmer.

Patwa Haveli is also known as ‘Kothari’s Patwa Haveli’. It is located in a narrow lane of Patwa complex, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

•    Best Time to Visit:

Jaisalmer is a hot place. So, foreign tourist should avoid visiting during the summer, which is from March to May. October to mid-February is the ideal period to visit the city.

•    Visiting Time:

It is open from 9 am to 5 pm.

•    Entry Fees:

Entry fee for foreign tourist is Rs. 100.  Extra charges are applicable for videography inside the mansion.

•    How to reach:

Jaisalmer has Airport, Railway station and also connected by RSRTC buses. You can reach there conveniently. Once you reach in Jaisalmer city, you need to take local transport to reach Patwon ki Haveli. Here are the transport details:
