The love story of Baz Bahadur and Roopmati is one of the most discussed folklores in Mandu. The love affair was very famous in ancient time and it is said to be glorified as eternal love. Rani Roopmati was a famous singer who met Baz Bahadur in a very uncertain situation. Baz Bahadur was the last independent ruler from 1554-1561.The story began when Baz Bahadur was returning from a hunting trip and on his way, he heard Roopmati singing in the woods. He was mesmerized with her singing and later on with her beauty. He became the king’s most prized possessions. Baz Bahadur dearly loved her, but Roopmati denied food before you would see the Narmada River. For her sake, the king built her a pavilion where you would admire the beauty of the Narmada River.
During that time, the king was also going through some internal state issues because he was defeated by the Gondwana queen Rani Durgavati. Instead of strengthening his warfare, he gave up everything and involved himself in art and poetry. He started composing ballads in honor of Roopmati and her beauty.
