Hanoi Weather in February

In Hanoi during February, although there are quite a few cloudy days, the weather is generally cool and pleasant with a little rainfall, making it an ideal time for travel. What’s more, this month coincides with Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, which is especially suitable for tourists to immerse themselves in the local culture.

Temperature

The temperature in Hanoi during February is a little bit changeable, yet generally it is mild - neither too cold nor too hot. The maximum daytime temperature can hit 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit), so a T-shirt with a light jacket is warm enough and perfectly comfy for strolling around the Old Quarter. While at night, the minimum temperature may drop to 13℃ (55℉); a gust of wind brings a hint of coolness, but you’ll just need to put on a thicker coat - no need to worry about shivering at all.

However, it is worth noting the “late spring cold snap”: on one day, the temperature may be as warm as spring, but it can drop by 5 - 8℃ (41 - 46℉) the next day, catching people off guard. Fortunately, such a temperature drop usually only lasts 1 - 2 days, so there’s no need to pack too much heavy winter clothes; just bring a thick jacket with you for emergencies.

Precipitation

In February, Hanoi has a monthly precipitation of about 26 mm, which is not much. However, there are around 11 rainy days on average, so you will probably feel that it rains frequently. But all these rains are sporadic drizzles with very light intensity. Each time it only lasts for one or two hours and then stops, which won’t affect your itinerary at all. When you are visiting the Old Quarter and the Temple of Literature, you barely need to worry about getting soaked. Even if you encounter a light rain, you can just duck into a street-side cafe for a cup of coffee and wait for it to stop. The air is especially fresher after the rain, and the wet flagstones in the Old Quarter create a retro filter effect for your photos.

Daytime and Sunshine Duration

In February, the sunrise time in Hanoi is roughly between 6:16 and 6:32, while the sunset time falls around 17:47 to 18:01, which adds up to about 11.5 hours of daylight. However, don’t be fooled by the seemingly long daylight hours, the average daily sunshine duration is only 2 hours. This is mainly because frequent clashes between cold and warm air masses during this month foster extensive cloud cover, leaving the sky often overcast. But even on cloudy days, the UV index can reach 10, which is a high radiation level. Therefore, be sure to take sun protection measures when going out.

Is February a Good Month to Visit Hanoi?

Of course. February is one of the best times to visit Hanoi.

In terms of weather, February is free from the biting cold of winter and the muggy heat of summer, offering a pleasant and comfortable coolness. The rainfall is mostly light and sporadic, which in no way hinders sightseeing.

More importantly, February coincides with Vietnam’s most important traditional festival - the Tet. The entire city is festively decorated with red lanterns; flower markets burst with colorful blooms; and incense smoke curls in temples. Additionally, you have the opportunity to enjoy traditional performances such as dragon and lion dances.

Packing List for Hanoi Trip in February

Clothes & Shoes: Considering the weather may change, it is recommended to pack several layers following the onion method. For the base layer, prepare short-sleeved T-shirts and shirts. For the insulation layer, bring a light jacket and a thin knitted coat. If you are worried about the late spring cold snap, bring a trench coat. As for pants, jeans and cargo pants will suffice. For feet, prepare sports shoes and hiking shoes.

Other Items: sunglasses, sunhats, sunscreen, umbrella

Travel Recommendations for Hanoi in February

Hanoi is often veiled in light mist in early mornings in February. Therefore, the top recommendation this time is Hoan Kiem Lake, where you can watch the sunlight slowly penetrate the hazy water vapor. The lake surface and the Tortoise Tower are faintly visible in the mist, creating a poetic scene.

Then, head straight to the Literature Temple. If it’s during the Tet around February 17, 2026, there will be lively sacrificial performances, brimming with traditional New Year’s atmosphere.

In the afternoon, wander through the 36 Streets adorned with festive ornaments, where you can hunt for New Year trinkets like couplets and lanterns, and grab authentic local snacks as you stroll along.

Even on a cloudy day, it doesn’t dampen the spirits. It’s just right to go and watch a water puppet show.

Tips

1.It can be a bit chilly to ride a motorcycle in Hanoi in February. Therefore, it is recommended to bring a hat and a scarf to avoid catching a cold or getting a headache from the wind.

2.During the Tet holiday period, large crowds lead to long taxi queues. It is advisable to book a ride in advance via car-hailing apps to save your travel time.

3.During the first three days of the Tet holiday, that is February 17 to 19 in 2026, most street food stalls will be closed. You can dine at restaurants in shopping malls during this period. In addition, the Water Puppet Theatre will also be temporarily closed in the three days. If you want to watch a performance, you can go to the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, which remains open throughout the holiday and offers free folk performances.
