Trip Planning FAQs
What are the highlights of Zambia?
South Luangwa National Park is arguably the best wildlife-viewing destination in Zambia, offering day and night guided game drives and some of the best walking safaris in Africa. It has a number of excellent lodges and tended camps.
Lower Zambezi National Park, situated along the northern bank of the Zambezi River, is also an extraordinarily wildlife-rich region. It offers a first-class safari experience, including guided game drives, walking safaris, boat cruises and fishing expeditions.
Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest wildlife reserve and also one of the biggest in Africa. Numerous antelope species can be found in the north of the park. Birds appear mainly in the extreme northwest of the park. Buffalo and elephant are concentrated in further south. Leopards are frequently spotted in forested areas. Walking safaris are best in winter, while boat trips are available along the Kafue River in the wet summer months.
Victoria Falls is regarded as Africa's most famous natural wonder. The falls can be viewed from both Zambia and Zimbabwe, but Zambian side tends to be quieter and more intimate. The Boiling Pot and the Devil's Pool are the most unique attraction sites on the Zambian side.
What language is spoken in Zambia?
The official language of Zambia is English, but dozens of other languages and dialects are spoken throughout the country. Almost everyone speaks or understands some English, and most Zambians living in urban areas speak English fluently. Bemba and Nyanja are the two most widely spoken local languages in Zambia.
Is it safe to take a Zambia tour?
Generally speaking, Zambia is a safe country and the locals are welcoming and friendly to tourists. But there are still some risks of pickpocketing and petty theft in cities. However, if you're on a guided safari, you are unlikely to encounter any trouble as your hotel or your guide will give you some safety tips all the time. When you are in the national parks for wildlife viewing, please always follow the rules of the parks and respect wild animals. As long as you listen to your guide's instructions, you will be very safe.
Is tipping customary in Zambia?
No. Tipping is not customary in Zambia, but always appreciated. You can tip 5% to 10% for good service in some upmarket restaurants. And in camps and lodges, some establishments expect you to tip the staff directly for their efforts, while others have set up a communal tip box.
