After breakfast, you will be accompanied to have a private guided ancient Rome walking tour, packing in some of the most impressive and monumental architecture of the capital city. The journey starts with Rome’s city heart, where the famous Colosseum is standing. Have a glimpse of the 50,000-seat elliptical amphitheater, which was constructed about 2,000 years ago, whispering the story of how gladiators and prisoners once fought for their lives with hungry lions and beasts, surrounded by cheering crowds. And now, you are just like one of those Roman spectators. Getting out of the amphitheater, you will be smitten by the 20-meter (66-foot) high spectacular Arch of Constantine, situated west of the Colosseum, which was built in honor of Emperor Constantine's victory over Maxentius in 312.
Then make our way to the neighboring Roman Forum & Palatine Hill. The forum used to be the city’s main venue for holding public speeches and criminal trials, surrounded by then most essential public buildings like theaters, temples, and senate houses. Stroll around to immerse yourself in the ancient Roman civilization and climb up the flat-topped Palatine Hill standing above the forum, where you can find palace ruins and beautiful gardens of several Roman emperors.
In the afternoon, follow the guide to pass through two stunning city squares, Piazza Venezia, and Piazza Navona. We will come to Pantheon to admire the perfect dome geometry of the world’s best preserved ancient Roman architecture and discover how it has stood for over 2,000 years intact. Without any additional reinforcing support structures, the dome with a diameter of 43.3 meters (142 ft.) was made of only concrete, which means it is supported by its own weight. The secret hides inside the vault's five rows of recesses, which help to distribute the forces and reduce the weight. Later, continue down the road to Trevi Fountain, the most beautiful and photographed fountain in Rome and even in the world. Founded in 1730, it’s still a legendary looker boasting breathtaking architecture and baroque-style sculptures. Don’t forget the old tradition of keeping your eyes closed and tossing a coin into the fountain with the right hand over your left shoulder, which is said to not only bring good luck but also ensure your return to Rome one day. Today’s last stop is Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square), which houses the famous Spanish Steps, where Audrey Hepburn encountered Gregory Peck in the popular film Roman Holiday (1953). You may also try a Gelato Audrey had ever tasted in Giolitti Cafe, and the ice cream heaven is only a 10-minute walk from the square.
