December to March in Winter

Winter from December to March is the most popular season to visit Sapporo. During this period, the city transforms into a magical snow-covered wonder land, thanks to its cold climate and abundant snowfall. The deep snow accumulation turns even the simplest setting into a romantic scenery, making it one of the best places in Japan to admire snowy landscapes.

To enhance the winter atmosphere, Sapporo hosts different kinds of events, including Sapporo White Illumination and German Christmas Market in December, Yukitouro at Jozankei Shrine in late January and the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival in February.

Due to the large amount of snowfall, winter is also a perfect time to visit Sapporo for snow sports lovers. There are diverse ski resorts to suit different needs – whether you are looking for a family-friendly snow park or a professional ski slope.

June to August in Summer

Experiencing mild temperatures, Sapporo is one of the coolest places in summer in Japan, offering a refreshing escape from the intense heat. Besides, compared with Japan’s big cities, like Tokyo or Osaka, Sapporo tends to be less crowded during summer holiday, offering a more relaxed and comfortable travel experience.

Various festivals also rejuvenate the city, such as Sapporo Matsuri in June and Sapporo Summer Festival from July to August. Expect diverse food stalls, unique parades, and live shows. By participating in these events, you can fully appreciate the cultural charm of Sapporo.

Another seasonal highlight is the flower blossoms. Major parks in the city center are ideal for flower viewing. For example, in June, you can enjoy wisteria at Nakajima Park and roses at Odori Park. July marks the blooming season of lavender, so head to Horomi Pass Lavender Garden to admire the vast lavender fields.

Best Time to View Sakura Blossom – Late April to Early May

Due to its northern location, Sapporo’s sakura blossom season arrives typically from late April to early May, later than most other parts of Japan. This makes it one of the last places in the country to catch sakura in bloom, offering a unique opportunity for late spring travelers. Here are some of the top spots to enjoy the blossoms and snap impressive photos.

Hokkaido Shrine by late April offers you a colorful view: both sakura and plum blossoms complete with each other beautifully.
Nakajima Park creates a quiet and poetic environment featuring ponds, bridges and Japanese building surrounded by sakura blossoms.
Moerenuma Park has 1,600 sakura trees, delivering a spectacular blossom view.

Embarrassing Times to Visit Sapporo

1. Mid November

Mid-November is not recommended to visit Sapporo. By then, the autumn leaves have mostly fallen, and the snow hasn’t fully arrived, leaving the scenery quite boring. Besides, there are no seasonal activities then.

2. Early to Mid-April

It is also unsuitable for a Sapporo tour. As it experiences a transitional period, the weather begins to turn warm, but it still feels cold and rainy. Noticeably, the street scene looks wet and dirty because of the melting snow. Moreover, you have to wait until the end of the month to see the sakura blossoms.

Travel Tips

1. Summer and winter are the most popular seasons to visit Sapporo, yet the busiest. Expect overcrowding attractions and expensive prices. Also, it’s best to book accommodations and flights early.
2. It’s always a good idea to check the forecast in advance, especially in winter, as the terrible snowstorm weather may affect transportation, and attractions may also close.
