Ho Chi Minh City Weather in May

May marks the start of the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City. Increasing rainfall, rising humidity, and the year’s hottest weather together create oppressive, stuffy conditions, making travel quite challenging.

Temperature

In May, Ho Chi Minh City sees its highest temperatures of the year.

The daytime high temperature can reach 35 - 38 degrees Celsius (95 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit), and even nearly 40℃ (104℉) in extreme cases. At noon, the streets are unusually quiet, as few people are willing to go out in the scorching heat. Even mobile phones trigger high-temperature alerts if left outdoors for too long.

While the nighttime low temperature hovers around 26 - 30℃ (79 - 86℉) and seem relatively mild, the weather still is muggy and uncomfortable as the local humidity stays as high as 80%. As soon as you step out of an air-conditioned room, you will quickly break out in sticky sweat.

Precipitation

In May, rainfall in Ho Chi Minh City surges, with an average monthly precipitation of 218 mm and 18 rainy days in total. This means you are very likely to encounter rain if you travel here during this period. Showers arrive unexpectedly: one moment sunny skies, the next a heavy downpour, sometimes even sun showers. These sudden rains may temporarily trap you in roadside shops, but fortunately, they pass quickly. They usually stop within 1 - 2 hours and will not affect your trip too much.

Daytime and Sunshine Duration

Ho Chi Minh City in May sees sunrise at 5:24 - 5:32 and sunset at 18:14 - 18:22, with around 13 hours of daylight. However, frequent showers and midday extreme heat stop you from outdoor exploration, which means you still need to arrange your itinerary wisely. Fortunately, the city enjoys about 5 hours of sunshine per day, offering plenty of opportunities to take nice photos and admire the sunrise and sunset glow over the Saigon River. Keep in mind that the UV index is as high as 11, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun.

Is May Not Really a Good Time to Visit Ho Chi Minh City?

May is not the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City, but it is not a bad choice either, for the following key reasons:

1. The intense heat is a normal feature of the tropical climate year round. You can have a relatively comfortable trip by planning your outdoor schedule in the morning and late afternoon and avoiding outdoor activities at midday.

2. Although rainfall is frequent during this period, it does not reach the yearly maximum, and there are no extreme weather events such as typhoons, so it has little impact on your travel plans overall.

3. Best of all, there are far fewer tourists, so you don’t have to wait in long lines at major attractions. Coupled with affordable prices for various services, you can enjoy a highly cost-effective trip.

Packing List for Ho Chi Minh City Trip in May

Clothes: Considering the rain and the sticky feeling, it is recommended to bring breathable and quick-drying summer clothes, such as sports T-shirts, sports shorts, cotton and linen shirts, tank tops, skirts and dresses. However, please note that if it rains heavily, try not to wear long dress as the hems are likely to get dirty and wet.

Shoes: Sandals are the best choice - sneakers get soaked easily by rain water, and flip-flops can slip off in puddles. However, if you prefer sneakers, bring waterproof shoe covers.

Special Activities in May, 2026

In local culture, Buddha’s Birthday falls on the 15th day of the 4th lunar month, which corresponds to May 31, 2026 in the Gregorian calendar. Celebrations usually kick off one week in advance. If you’re in Ho Chi Minh City at this time, you can join a wide range of special events.

Temple and Folk Rituals

You can visit Giac Lam Pagoda to take part in the Buddha Bathing Ceremony and wash away worries, or join the chanting and blessing rituals to feel the solemn and sacred religious atmosphere. As night falls, you may go to Phap Hoa Pagoda for the lantern ceremony, where thousands of lotus lanterns light up the Saigon Riverbank in a beautiful, dreamlike scene. Besides, float parades, dragon and lion dances, and other folk performances will be held on Pham Ngu Lao Street and Nguyen Van Linh Boulevard.

Buddhist-themed Park Experience

Ho Chi Minh City is home to Suoi Tien Theme Park, the world’s only Buddhist-themed amusement park. The venue takes on a particularly grand atmosphere on Buddha’s Birthday, decorated with a giant Buddha statue and a wishing tree. As you enjoy the rides and attractions, you can fully immerse yourself in its spiritual Buddhist ambiance and make prayers for yourself and your family.

Tips

1. As rainfall during this period mostly comes as heavy afternoon downpours, we recommend to avoid long outdoor excursions in the afternoon, or prepare a backup plan for rainy weather.

2. In May, Ho Chi Minh City has high humidity and active mosquitoes. Please protect yourself against mosquito bites, bring mosquito repellent, and be aware of dengue fever. Seek medical care immediately if you develop a fever after being bitten.

3. Some roads will be closed during Buddha’s Birthday events. Please check notices ahead of time and plan your route accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.
