Ho Chi Minh City Weather in September

In September, Ho Chi Minh City experiences its most rainfall and highest humidity of the year. Combined with the high temperature, it feels very uncomfortable. Although sunshine hours are short, UV intensity remains high. However, this month features several festivals, which can be unique travel experiences.

Temperature

Although the temperature in Ho Chi Minh City in September is not extremely high statistically, it feels quite oppressive.

Daytime highs hover around 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit), rarely exceeding 34℃ (93℉) and sometimes dropping as low as 28℃ (82℉). However, you will most likely feel stuffy, as humidity reaches up to 85%. A light sweat alone may leave you feeling as if you’re wrapped in a warm, damp garment.

Nighttime lows are around 24 - 25°C (75 - 77℉), making early mornings and evenings relatively pleasant. You can do plenty of walking without sweating heavily. Therefore, we recommend wandering the night markets and tasting local snacks, strolling along the Saigon River for the cool breeze, or experiencing the nightlife in Phạm Ngu Lao Street.

Precipitation

In September, Ho Chi Minh City experiences its wettest climate of the year, with an average monthly precipitation of 327 mm and rain falling on 23 days.

During this period, rain comes sudden and violent: one moment the sun is blazing, the next raindrops come crashing down like handfuls of beans being poured out. Fortunately, the downpours seldom last long, usually stopping within an hour. However, there may be several showers in a single day, so you should be prepared to adjust your plans at any time.

Possible Typhoon Strike

September marks Vietnam’s peak typhoon season, and Ho Chi Minh City is also prone to its impacts. They often bring prolonged heavy rainfall, which can easily trigger urban flooding and even traffic paralysis, making outdoor travel highly inadvisable. Flight delays are also common during this period.

Daytime / Sunshine Duration

Sunrise in Ho Chi Minh City is around 5:45 and sunset around 18:00 in September. Daylight gradually shortens to 12 hours. Coupled with frequent afternoon showers, the practical time for outdoor sightseeing is quite limited. The actual sunshine is only 5 hours on average daily. Therefore, if you plan to visit landmarks that require good lighting, such as the Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica and the Pink Church, it is best to schedule these itineraries in the morning.

Kind Reminder: Even on cloudy and rainy days, don’t slack off on sun protection. Ultraviolet rays can easily penetrate the clouds, reaching a level of 11 or above. Prolonged exposure without protection can not only damage your skin but also harm your eyesight.

Packing List for Visiting Ho Chi Minh City in September

Clothes: Pack lightweight, breathable and quick-drying summer clothes, such as short-sleeved T-shirts, short-sleeved shirts, dresses, skirts, shorts and thin pants. Indoor air conditioning can be quite strong, so bring a long-sleeved shirt to avoid catching a chill. If you don’t want to pack too much, a sun-protective jacket is a good alternative, which is also needed for sun protection.

Shoes: We highly recommend water shoes or non-slip sandals - they dry quickly after being wet by rain, so keep your feet breathable. If you easily get tired feet from long walks, bring sneakers or hiking shoes paired with waterproof shoe covers.

Others: Sun screen, sun hats, sunglasses, parasols, umbrellas, raincoats, mosquito repellent, and etc.

Travel Recommendations for Ho Chi Minh City in September, 2026

Vietnam National Day

September 2nd is Vietnam’s National Day. On this day, streets and alleys across Ho Chi Minh City are adorned with national flags, creating a joyful and festive atmosphere. Many attractions and commercial areas host cultural performances and concerts. The highlight is the spectacular fireworks display and drone show. You can watch them along the banks of the Saigon River or near the Central Street. If your hotel is close to either of these two spots, you don’t even need to crowd with others - you can enjoy the show right from your balcony.

Mid-Autumn Festival

The Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which is September 15, 2026. During the festival, many local venues host special activities such as mooncake making, dragon and lion dances. For an immersive festive experience, head to Nguyen Trai Street, the famous lantern street. It is decorated with various lanterns themed around the moon and rabbits. You can take beautiful photos and buy lanterns as souvenirs.

Tips

1. During the National Day holiday, traffic control will be implemented on the main streets, and vehicles will not be allowed to enter. It is recommended to check the relevant notices online in advance and plan a walking route. Additionally, due to the large number of people during the festival, it may be difficult to hail a taxi. If you need a vehicle, it is suggested to make a reservation also in advance.

2. In the morning of September in Ho Chi Minh City, the weather is relatively good, which is suitable for visiting outdoor attractions such as Cu Chi Tunnels and the Pink Church. In the afternoon, there are frequent showers, so it is recommended to prioritize visiting indoor places such as the Independence Palace, the Central Post Office, and shopping malls, where you can take shelter at any time.

3. Keep an eye on the typhoon forecast for Vietnam and try to avoid coming during the affected period to prevent strong winds and heavy rain from affecting your travel. If your itinerary is already set, don’t worry too much. Typhoons rarely have extreme impacts on Ho Chi Minh City, and normalcy usually returns within 1 - 2 days.
