Hakone is hot in July. In fact, July is the second hottest month in Hakone and the temperature showcases a rising trend, which means it’s getting hotter and hotter as a whole.

Within the month, the highest temperature for most days ranges 30 - 34 ℃ (86 - 93.2℉), and a few days even exceeds 36 ℃ (96.8℉). Even though, compared with Tokyo, it is 3 - 4 ℃ (37.4 - 39.2℉) cooler. Also, after occasional heavy rain, it turns cool and the temperature can drop by about 10℃ (50℉).

Along with June, August, and September, July ranks among the Hakone’s rainiest months. And torrential rain occurs, although not much; sometimes, the rainfall within 24 hours can exceed 150mm. In that case, it’s hard for Hakone Ropeway and Pirate Ship to run according to the timetable, which influences your travel greatly. Also, the humidity arrives at the highest level all year around – 85% and you may feel uncomfortable.

Since July, the sun rises later and later and sets earlier and earlier. But fortunately, the daylight hours are still long, and visitors have enough daytime for traveling around.

Although they are not long, July is one of the months with the strongest UV index - 6 all year round, causing great harm to skin. Is Hakone Worth Visiting in July?

1. Given the rainy weather and the high temperature, July is not the best month to go to Hakone. 
2. Second, the chance to see Mount Fuji in summer is the lowest compared with other seasons, and the rainy weather in July causes a high cloud cover rate of 46%.
3. Third, July is within the summer holiday of most northern hemisphere countries. As a popular travel destination, Hakone attracts a large number of visitors. The traveling experience is not good due to the crowds. Most of all, it’s harder to book hotel rooms and their prices are high.

In spite of these, the advantage of going to Hakone in July is the good scenery full of vitality, unlike the bleak winter.

What to Wear to Visit Hakone in July

Traveling to Hakone in July, the light, breathable, and sweat absorbing clothes made of cotton are the best choices.

Upper:
A loose cotton T-shirt is the best choice. After you sweat, it is easier to dry up than others. To avoid being burnt by sunshine, you are also advised to pack thin sunscreen clothes. For girls, they can wear a loose summer dress. It is very cool and photograph-friendly.

Lower:
Shorts and loose long pants are both good choices. For girls, skirts are also acceptable but it is suggested to choose long one to cover their legs from strong UV rays.

Shoes:
For indoor attractions, sandals and casual shoes are ok. While, if your travel plan includes many outdoor activities, breathable summer sneakers are more suitable. It’s important because there are many stairs on the mountain road in Hakone.

Other Items to Take:

1. Umbrella;
2. Sun cream, sunglasses, and sunhat;
3. Mosquito repellent, because Hakone is surrounded by mountains and there is an overflow of mosquitoes in summer.

What to Do in Hakone in July 2026

1. Stroll in Hakone’s Forest

Planning to visit Hakone in July but don’t like the crowds and high temperature? Then, strolling in the forests around Chisuji Fall can be considered. This hiking trail is in the deep mountains with dense forests, making it very cool. Only a few hikers and photographers would come here, which makes the trail very quiet.

2. Visit Hakone Venetian Glass Museum

During the rainy or very hot moments, you may need some indoor attractions to visit, like museums. Venetian Glass Museum is the first museum in Japan to display Venice glass works and one of the most visit-worthies in Hakone. In the Museum, there are 2 exhibition halls where modern art glass works and those from 15th - 19th centuries are on show respectively. If you are interested, you can also experience making your own glass work in the Museum’s.

3. Hakone Summer Festival Week

Every year from July 31st to August 5th, the grandeur Hakone Summer Festival Week would be celebrated around Lake Ashi and Hakone’s major Shrines. During the week, activities like religious rituals, setting fireworks, and putting lanterns on the Lake would be held. On July 31st, the daytime celebration place is in Kuzuryu Shrine. That night, there is a firework show.
