Is it Worth Going to Hakone in June?
June is not a bad month to go to Hakone.First, the average temperature is not high to an unbearable level. Compared with Tokyo, it is much cooler. Second, although the chance of rain is high, you can avoid it by checking weather forecast. The pity is that Mount Fuji may not be seen clearly like in other months.
Second, from the perspective of travel budget, traveling to Hakone in June is more cost-effective. The prices for accommodation in June is the lowest throughout the year. For rooms of the same standards, it is about 40% cheaper in June than in other months.
Last, from mid-June, the hydrangea blossom - Hakone’s highlight in summer begins to bloom.
How to Dress in Hakone in June

For girls, a breathable long dress is very suitable. Or, they can wear T-shirt as the upper and skirt/ shorts as the lower. For shoes, if you have no plans to hike or do other outdoor activities, then sandals are ok; if you do, then take an extra pair of summer sneakers. For boys, please also dress loosely. For the upper, cotton T-shirt is suitable for outdoor walking as it has good properties like quick sweat absorption and heat dissipation; for the lower, shorts and sneakers are enough.
To protect your skin from strong sunlight, change skirt/ shorts to long summer pants. What’s more, if you plan to travel to high-altitude areas, a long-sleeve shirt can help you keep warm.

What to Do in Hakone in June 2026
1. Soak Onsen

Try to imagine the scene: you are bathing in the outdoor pool, your body is touched and wrapped by the warm water, what you can feel is the gentle breeze, and what you hear is the sound of nature - the rain dropping on the roof. What an enjoyment it is!2. Appreciate Hydrangea Flowers by Hakone Tozan Train
From mid-June to mid-July, 10,000 hydrangea flowers of various colors would bloom along both sides of the Hakone Tozan Train track. You can watch them through the train’s window while sitting on the train. Or, around some stations like Hakone Yumoto Station, Tonosawa Station, and Ohiradai Station, this kind of flowers bloom vigorously, so don’t hesitate, get off the train, and take photos with them.

3. Watch Japanese Rituals in Kuzuryu Shrine
To feel Japan’s religious atmosphere in June of Hakone, you can go to Kuzuryu Shrine. Every year on June 13th, the Kuzuryu Shrine Festival is held to worship the local deity, which is said to bring people good luck. On that day, you can make reservation in advance and then take the ship from Motohakone to the Shrine on that day, watch priests holding rituals, and visit its main shrine.

1. Even if it is in summer, Hakone Pirate Ship and Hakone Ropeway might stop running due to rainy and foggy weather.2. Fog often occurs in June and it influences appreciation of the natural beauty. If it is the case, you can go to indoor attractions. Recommended places are Open Air Museum, Pola Museum of Art, Venetian Glass Museum, and Okada Museum of Art.
