Hirosaki Weather in April

 Season: Spring
 Key Points:
1. The temperature is getting mild, but still chilly during early mornings and nights.
2. Rainfall is prone to be light and doesn’t last very long.
3. The sakura season falls in late April to early May, which coincides with Japan’s Golden Week, which may lead to crowds in Hirosaki Park, the locally most popular place for sakura admiration.

Temperature

The weather of Hirosaki in April is becoming increasingly mild as the time progresses, with the average high temperature of 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), and average low of 3℃ (37.4℉). That said, the temperature fluctuates significantly. Particularly, there is a great temperature gap between day and night. Around noon, the maximum temperature can reach about 15℃ (59℉), which is comfortably mild; however, during the night, the temperature drops below 5℃ (41℉), making you feel quite cold.

In the first a few days of early April, the daytime temperature is still low, approximately 5℃, not to mention that the temperature during night can plummet under 0℃ (32℉). Therefore, it’s not surprising that snowfall may occur, and there are snow covers lingering in some areas.

Spring signals finally become prominent in mid-April, as the Hirosaki’s climate turns quite warm with the average temperature ranging at 7-15℃ (44.6-59℉). If it’s sunny, the maximum temperature can reach above 20℃ (68℉). However, when the sun is absent, combined with winds or rainfall, the perceived temperature could be back to be chilly. To cope with the changeable weather, you’d better pack both thick and light outwear and bring some cold medicine, just in case.

In late April, Hirosaki eventually can bid farewell to winter, with temperatures rising to 12-22℃ (53.6-71.6℉) during the day. Diversified sakura are in full bloom, contributing to delightful spring outings.

Precipitation & Humidity

Average monthly precipitation: 96mm
Average wet days: 16 days
Mean Relative Humidity: 77%

In the early April, there may be 2-3 times of snowfalls, which are usually light and melt very quickly. As for the rainy weather, don’t worry too much. The rainfalls are basically very mild, and don’t last for too long. A common occurrence is that on the same day, it might be cloudy or overcast in the morning, then sometime later, it starts to rain lightly, and soon after, the rain stops and the sky clears up, allowing you to witness a beautiful sunset.

To address this changeable weather, you are recommended to pack a portable rain gear every time you go out. Or if you don’t want to expose yourself in the rain, adjust the itinerary and visit some indoor attractions instead; Hirosaki City Museum, Aomori Bank Museum, and Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art are all popular options.

Daylight Duration & Sunshine Hours

Sunrise: 05:23 - 04:40
Sunset: 18:02 - 18:33
Average sunny days: 12 days
Average sunshine duration: 8 hours/day

With extending daylight duration from about 12.5 hours to almost 14 hours, you are able to enjoy a fulfilling daytime trip, suppose there is no significant impact brought by bad weather. Even if there is, you’ve got the chance to spare some time for adjustment by virtue of the adequate daylength.

Wise Dressing & Packing Guide for Hirosaki April Trip

 Clothing
Based on the temperature fluctuations, dressing in layers is an optimal method. A sweatshirt plus a wind-proof jacket would be enough most time. Taking the distinct temperature gap between day and night into account, thicker outer wear like the down coat is better to be packed in your suitcase.

For the bottom clothing, it’s recommended to bring a pair of thick sweatpants. Or you can prepare long johns and jeans, so that you can get changed more flexibly according to the temperature.

For women who pursue stylish lookings, knit dress together with warm leggings are suitable, too.

 Footwear
Anti-slip casual sneakers with waterproof surface are highly recommended, as they are convenient for all activities. Besides, they are more secure for walking considering that there may be some water craters on the road and the lawns in the park become very slippery after it rains.

If there is extra space in your suitcase, you can bring your stylish boots to match your dress.

 Other Necessities
1. Bring a hat as you might need it when the weather is not fine or wind blows.
2. The cherry blossoms swaying in the wind are very beautiful, but people with rhinitis should prepare masks.

3. Once again, don’t forget your rain gear.

Where to See Sakura in Hirosaki in April

Every year in mid-April, the cherry blossom buds in Hirosaki Park begin to slowly bloom. From late April to early May, more than two thousand cherry flower trees fully unleash their beauty, and the annual Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival is in full swing. The following are some excellent viewing spots:

1. Hirosaki Castle Honmaru Observation Deck: From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the pink cherry blossoms and the snow-capped peaks of Mount Iwaki in the distance. The sunset from here is particularly breathtaking.

2. Along the west moat of the Hirosaki Park, including Shunyo Bridge: The moat is the best place to admire the “sakura rafts”, where numerous cherry blossom petals float on the water, creating a pink flower raft landscape. At night, when the lights are on, you can also enjoy the cherry blossoms reflected in the water.

3. The road from Hirosaki Castle to Mount Iwaki: On a clear day, you can see cherry blossom trees stretching for about 20 kilometers (12 miles) along this road, creating a stunning view against the backdrop of snow-covered Mount Iwaki.

Note: The Hirosaki Park Honmaru and its northern outer walls are open daily from 9:00 to 17:00, with ticket sales ending at 16:30; however, during the cherry blossom festival, opening hours are extended to from 7:00 to 21:00. Furthermore, the Hirosaki Castle Main Keep has also been open to the public this month.
