Hirosaki Weather in August

 Season: Summer
 Key information:
1. Hirosaki’s weather in August is hot overall, but in a temperate way compared with other popular Japan cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
2. This month also features rainy climate, yet you don’t have to worry about it too much since intense rainfalls only occur occasionally.
3. Nebuta Festival is the highlight, held from August 1st to 7th every year.

Hottest Month of the Year, Yet Not Scorching

August is characterized as the hottest month of the year in Hirosaki, but there are seldom extremely hot days.

Most of the month, the maximum temperatures are at 26-30 degrees Celsius (79-86 degrees Fahrenheit). Occasionally on sunny days, the high temperature can reach 32℃ (90℉), but normally would not exceed 35℃ (90℉). As a result, you may feel hot, especially after long walk. But as long as you don’t expose yourself under the sunlight for too long, you can still enjoy a comfortable summer trip in Hirosaki.

By late afternoon and evening, the temperature gradually drops to a cool level, around 16-22℃ (90℉). You may even need to add a light coat if spending long time outdoors at night.

Frequent Rainfalls & High Humidity

There are approximately 19 rainy days in August, during which heavy downpours may occur for several times. Fortunately, in most cases, the weather condition presents a mix of sunny hours and light showering hours, and that’s why the total rainfall for the month is only 98mm on average. On not heavily rainy days, you can bring rain gear to assist you with outdoor visits or change your itinerary to visit indoor attractions such as the Aomori Bank Museum, Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art, and Hirosaki City Museum.

The humidity is very high, about 85% on average. Thus, it may be a bit muggy around hot noon.

Daylight Duration & Sunshine Hours

Sunrise time: 04:35 - 05:05 (1st-31st)
Sunset time: 18:55 - 18:14 (1st-31st)

As the month progresses, the daylight duration is shortening from about 14 hours 20 minutes to about 13 hours, but generally is enough for your daily travel if the weather condition is favorable.

The sunshine lasts for 8 hours per day on average. Combined with a moderately high UV index of 5, you are suggested to take sun protection measures.

Packing Recommendations for Hirosaki Trip in August

 Clothing
The weather during daytime is hot mostly, so it’s suitable for you to wear short-sleeved shirt together with a pair of shorts/skirt, or loose pants. Besides, you need to bring a thin coat as you can add it when the temperature cools down in the early morning or late afternoon.

 Footwear
Breathable casual sneakers or canvas shoes are more recommended, as they are also comfortable for long walk. Additionally, you can bring a pair of waterproof shoe covers in case it rains.

 Other accessories
1.    A parasol is an essential item for your trip to Hirosaki in August, as it can shield you from the strong sunshine and protect you from the rain.
2.    Extra items like the sunhat and sunglass are necessary to protect your face and eyes from strong UV rays.

Travel Highlights for Hirosaki in August, 2026

 Nebuta Festival
Nebuta Festival is the most significant and interesting summer event in Hirosaki. It is usually held on the evenings of August 1st to 7th every year, during which you will see grand parades in the city center featuring huge fan-shaped floats depicting warriors, samurai, and other legendary figures. Accompanied by taiko drums and piccolo music, the scene is truly spectacular. On the last day of the festival, the “Nanukabi Okuri” event is held: people put floats into the river, light them up, and then let them float away into the distance.

Note: Because the festival attracts a large number of visitors, you need to reserve a paid ticket in advance. If you choose the free viewing area, it is also best to arrive a few hours earlier so that you can occupy a good viewing position in front.

 Picking Hirosaki Apples
Hirosaki apples truly live up to their reputation. Every year starting in August, some varieties of apple at Hirosaki Apple Park ripen, and visitors can enjoy the fun of picking apples on their own. Here, you can also select and purchase many local specialties related to apples.
