1. Winter Deer Gathering ‘Shikayose’, Nara Park

The most famous animal in Nara is the deer and the most popular place to see the deer is the Nara Park. In February, the Nara Park holds Winter Deer Gathering and provide visitors a marvelous chance to see the deer galloping. The volunteer of the Nara Deer Protection Association holds the French horn to play Beethoven's Symphony No.6, Pastoral. After hearing the sounds, the deer gallop to the volunteer and the volunteer shares the chestnuts with them. When volunteer finishes sharing the chestnuts, visitors can feed them with the special crackers.

Tips
1. The deer in Nara Park can only eat the crackers specially prepared for them. Please don’t feed any other food to them. If you notice that other people are feeding other things to them, please stop them at once.
2. Please take care of your items in Nara Park and don’t litter any in case of being eaten by deer accidently.
3. While feeding the deer, please don’t shout or make loud noise.

2. Setsubun Mantoro, Kasuga Taisha Shrine

Near the Nara Park, the Kasuga Taisha Shrine, which is one of the top three shrines in Japan, holds the lantern lighting activity on the Setsubun day. In 2025, it is between February 2nd and 4th. People send their worship to the deities by means of the lanterns and pray for the good luck in the future. More than 3,000 lanterns can give you an absolutely unforgettable memory.

3. Plum Blossom Festival, Tsukigase Plum Grove

February is also the best time to view the plum blossom. The Tsukigase Plum Grove in Nara is one of the most popular places to appreciate the plum blossoms. More than 10,000 plum blossom trees are planted here and every year in February, Tsukigase Plum Grove holds the Plum Blossom Festival. This festival will be held between mid-February and early March. In this period, visitors can not only appreciate the splendid flowers, but also experience the special plum blossom ice-cream here.
