The temperature in April generally shows a slowly increasing trend. However, the first half of the month is still a bit cold, with maximums generally ranging from 8-16°C (46-61℉) and minimums between 4-10°C (39-50℉). In some years, the lowest temperature once dropped to around 0°C (32℉). The second half of the month noticeably warms up, with daytime temperatures generally ranging from 14-22°C (57-72℉), sometimes reaching as high as 25°C (77℉) on sunny days. At night, temperatures drop by around 4-8°C, so add layers of clothing to avoid catching a cold. Of course, the climate in this month varies from year to year. If there’s consecutive rainfall for a few days, even in late April, the temperature stays at a low level.

Given the overall low temperatures in early mornings and after dusk, you’d better bring a thick outwear like a 3-in-1 jacket. It is also helpful if you happen to encounter overcast days during your trip. In sunny days mostly, you can wear a long-sleeved shirt plus a hoodie.

Regarding lower body, it is advisable to bring thicker ones like slacks for cold days and thinner ones like jeans for warm days. Knitted skirts are suitable for female tourists this month, just remember to wear a pair of warm tights.

For another, the daylight hours are enough for your daytime sightseeing. Above all, natural scenery is quite charming in April for the cherry flowers are in full bloom. Particularly, the early to middle period is the best time for admiration. If you are only available in late April, 2026, don’t worry, because cherry blossoms with longer flowering period in places like the Zuihoden still await you!

Best Places for Cherry Flowers in Sendai

1.    You can go to Toshogu Shrine to enjoy the cherry blossoms. Besides, every year on the third Saturday and Sunday of April, the “Spring Festival” is held here, during which you can also enjoy interesting and lively activities such as shinto music performances.

2.    Tsutsujigaoka Park is also one of the popular spots for taking photos of cherry blossoms. At night, when the lights are on, the cherry blossoms look particularly romantic.

3.    Hakishio Riverbank is truly an enchanting place for cherry blossom viewing in Sendai. It is renowned for its approximately eight-kilometer-long cherry blossom embankment road. On clear days, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery while having a picnic here, or stroll along the embankment and take wonderful photos.

4.    If you want to go to a less crowded place where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery in peace, Matsushima and Nishi Park might be more suitable for you.

Travel Tip

Last several days of April fall in Japan’s Golden Week, also the peak tourist season in Sendai, leading to crowdedness in some popular attractions. Therefore, we recommend that you avoid the time period.
