Sendai Weather in July

 Season: Summer
 Key information:
1.    Sendai weather in July is hot overall, accompanied by high humidity.
2.    Precipitation is quite frequent over the month, especially during the rainy season from early to mid-July.
3.    Mid to late July is the high season for tourism in Sendai.

Hot Overall but Not Scorching

Sendai remains hot over July but not scorching. In the early days of July, the temperature is not very high, with the daytime temperatures usually ranging from 26-30 degrees Celsius (78.8-86 degrees Fahrenheit). In the middle and late part of the month, the daytime temperature often stays around 30℃ (86℉). If it happens to be a sunny day, the temperature at noon can exceed 35℃ (95℉). Due to the high humidity in July, your overall feeling is muggy. However, the morning and evening temperatures are very comfortable at 18-24℃ (64.4-75.2℉), generally making you feel quite cool.

Frequent Precipitation & Highest Humidity

Sendai is still in the rainy season from early to mid-July, with overwhelmingly 21 rainy days on average over the whole month. Needless to say, this city experiences the wettest time of the year. Although heavy rain doesn’t occur very often, it is quite common for there to be intermittent light rainfalls for several consecutive days throughout the week, causing inconvenience for travelers.

Sendai in July has the highest humidity about 83% on average.

Long Daylight Hours; Rare Sunny Days

Sunrise time (1st – 31st): 04:17 – 04:38
Sunset time (1st – 31st): 19:05 – 18:49

The daylight duration is very long from more than 14.5 hours at the beginning of July to about 14 hours at the end. But don’t let the number fool you because the sun rises very early, so it may be unrealistic or hard to utilize the first two hours of daylight. However, the late sunset allows you to enjoy longer afternoon time outdoors if the weather permits.

Sunny weather is scarce, accounting for no more than 25% of the whole month, so it would not be easy for travelers to take photographs with good lighting. Nevertheless, the UV rays are basically very strong, with an average index of 6, so you are advised to not stay in broad daylight for too long.

Is July a Recommended Month to Visit Sendai?

No. July is not a recommended month to visit Sendai.

First of all, in respect to the weather, your trip is most likely disturbed by the rain. With insufficient sunlight, the aesthetic value of the landscapes of Sendai is greatly diminished. For example, many tourists enjoy visiting Aoba Castle, not only to see the equestrian statue of Date Masamune standing in the center of the square, but also to overlook the largest city in the Tohoku region of Japan from this high vantage point. However, on overcast or rainy days, everything is shrouded in gray, and even the giant Sendai Daikannon is lost in the mist.

Secondly, traveling in July, especially in mid to late July, is not cost-effective. As the summer holiday is approaching from the middle of July, travelers increase accordingly, leading to substantial rise in prices of train and air tickets.

However, if you insist on traveling in July, make sure the relevant gear listed below is well prepared. Also, some necessary suggestions and tips are provided at the end.

Travel Gear for 2026 Sendai Trip in July

 Clothing
Breathable and light clothing is needed on account of the muggy climate. For instance, you can bring several summer T-shirts and shorts to cope with the hot temperature. Dresses and skirts are nice options as well for female tourists. On top of that, we recommend that you bring an open-front thin shirt with long sleeves or a sun-protective outer wear and long summer pants for early/late hours and intense sunny moments.

 Footwear
Wearing shoes with good ventilation and easy-drying features makes your feet feel much cooler. Sandals are optimal options. Considering that you may take long walks around the city or climb stairs in places like the Zuihoden or the Osaki Hachiman Shrine, casual sneakers would be better.

Other Accessories
1.    Always take a portable umbrella when going out in case it rains. If you’re going to spots with many people, the raincoat is perhaps more convenient.

2.    To protect your skin from strong UV rays, the sunhat and sunscreen are particularly needed.

Travel Suggestions & Tips

It’s important to note that although the days are long and the sun sets late this month, the opening hours of some popular attractions like Zuihoden and Toshogu Shrine will not be extended but fixed; they close at 4:50 pm and 4:30 pm respectively.

It is suggested that you combine indoor attractions such as Sendai City Museum, Miyagi Museum of Art, and Sendai Uminomori Aquarium with outdoor attractions such as Jozenji-dori Avenue, Nishi Park, and Tsutsujigaoka Park in your day trip. This will help you avoid discomfort from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation and also allow you to prepare for the possible rainfall.

For those who are only available in mid or late July, it is recommended to book the train/air tickets in advance in case they are in short supply due to great demand.
