Located at the Pacific coast near the center of Honshu Island in Japan, Yokohama has a temperate maritime climate. Therefore, it is humid all year round and Yokohama has neither bitterly cold nor severely hot weather. Precipitation is mainly concentrated in spring, summer, and autumn.

The annual temperature variation in Yokohama is quite significant, with monthly average lows from 3-25 degrees Celsius (37.4-77 degrees Fahrenheit) and highs from 10-30℃ (50-86℉). But the temperature difference within a single day is relatively small, only approximately 6-7℃ (42.8-44.6℉).
August is the hottest month in Yokohama, with an average high temperature at 30℃ (86℉). However, unlike some southern cities of Japan, it scarcely experiences severe heat: the highest temperature is usually at 32-35℃ (89.6-95℉).

January is the coldest month in Yokohama, yet the temperature remains within a tolerable range. During daytime, it is generally above 8℃ (46.4℉). In early mornings and evenings, the temperature is at 2-4℃ (35.6-39.2℉) mostly. Yokohama weather below 0℃ (32℉) occurs rarely.
Precipitation & Humidity
The annual average precipitation in Yokohama is 1,730.8mm, and most of the precipitation occurs during the rainy season from mid-June to early July, and autumn and typhoon periods from June to October. In rainy season, Yokohama often experiences consecutive rainy days, but rainfalls are moderate most of the time. The strike of the typhoon usually brings heavy rainfall, but the weather normally clears up in 1-2 days.As a coastal city, Yokohama is surely humid all year round, with seasonal variations, while it can be even more humid in rainy periods.
Does Snow Fall in Yokohama?
Yes, but rarely. The first snowfall in Yokohama usually occurs in mid or late December. However, snowy weather is mainly concentrated in January and February. In general, the average number of snowy days throughout the year is about 2-3, and the annual snowfall amount does not exceed 10cm. And most of the time, the snow melts quickly and seldom accumulates.
Best Time to Visit Yokohama
Generally speaking, March to May and September to November are most favored time when the weather is neither hot nor too cold. If you are obsessed with the beautiful seasonal scenery, then don’t miss the two best periods from late March to early April and mid-November to mid-December when you can admire the cherry flowers and autumn leaves, respectively.

Spring: March to May

In spring, Yokohama climate is generally mild during the day, and a little cold in early mornings and evenings, with the average high temperature ranging 14-22℃ (57.2-71.6℉), and low 6-16℃ (42.8-60.8℉). Rainfall is moderate but relatively frequent, with rainy days no less than 15 every month.

You are recommended to adopt layered dressing in spring months. In daytime mostly, you can wear a knitted sweater, a thick hoodie, or a long-sleeved shirt plus a trench coat for the upper, and a sweatpants or jeans for the bottom. In early March and cool mornings and nights, thick jackets are needed. As for the shoes, hiking boots or casual sneakers will do.

Cherry flowers of Yokohama start to bloom in late March and exhibit their full beauty in early April. You can admire them in attractions like the Yamashita Park, the Sankeien Garden, the Negishi Forest Park and the “Sakura Road” in Minato Mirai 21.

In late April to early May every year, there is the “Yokohama Frühlings Fest” held in Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse where you can taste German beer and enjoy German music and cuisine. However, you need to keep in mind that this period is also the Golden Week of Japan when it’s usually very crowded.

Wearing light and breathable clothing is the most appropriate choice when you travel in Yokohama in summer. Summer dress, or Summer T-shirts together with shorts/skirts are recommended. Sandals or shoes with good ventilation are suitable.

There are many fireworks shows, food markets and music festivals in Yokohama during the summer. These diversified activities are commonly seen in places around the Yamashita Park and Minato Mirai. The “Sparkling Twilight” is the highlight of all summer festivals in Yokohama. It is held in mid-July annually when you can enjoy the most beautiful fireworks and various marvelous performances in Yokohama Port.
From late July to late August, especially during the Obon Festival, the number of tourists will increase significantly. Moreover, there are usually many activities in summer, so Yokohama will be quite crowded. To ensure a smooth Yokohama trip, you need to plan your itinerary wisely and book your flights and hotels in advance.

Autumn: September to November

Frequent rainy weather lingers till mid-October. The temperature is warm overall in the day, about 17-27℃ (62.6-80.6℉). During the night, the temperature is cool mostly; but by late November, the lowest temperature can drop to 6℃ (42.8℉).

Every September, there is the grand Yokohama Beer Festival held in Osanbashi Hall.
If you are planning your 2025 Yokohama trip for the coming October, appreciating the Jazz melodies is something not to be missed. There is also the grand Jazz Promenade.
After mid-November, Yokohama is decorated with beautiful autumn foliage: red maple leaves and golden ginkgo leaves can be seen in many spots like the Sankeien Garden, the Yamashita Park and the Negishi Forest Park.

Winter: December to February

The climate of Yokohama is cold in winter, but not extreme. Even at night, the temperature is generally at 3-6℃ (37.4-42.8℉). In January, the coldest month, there might be a few days with the temperature below 0℃ (32℉). Besides, winter is the season with the least precipitation throughout the year. As a result, snowfalls are very rare.

Wool sweater plus padded overcoat together with thick sweatpants are suitable to keep out the cold in winter. Besides, hats, gloves and scarves are useful to keep you warm. As for the shoes, snow boots are optimal.

Do not miss the plum blossoms in the Negishi Forest Park with approximately 130 types of plum trees, if you are going to visit Yokohama in mid or late February.

Daylight duration are much shorter in winter, about 10 hours, so you’d better start your trip early, so as to visit more scenic spots.
