Kamala Nehru Park, Mumbai

As a part of the Hanging Gardens complex, Kamala Nehru Park is a perfect place for entertainment. It is located at the top of Malabar Hill, opposite to Hanging Gardens. Here exists pleasant landscapes of trees and flowers, as well as a building in boots’ shape and various performances. Besides, tourists can appreciate the Marine Drive below the hill - also known as Queen’s necklace. One may also notice many families camping or partying in the vast grassland in the park. History of Kamala Nehru Park

Kamala Nehru Park was first built in 1952 A.D. in memory of Jawaharlal Nehru, the former prime minister of India, an Indian national leader succeeded Mahatma Gandhi. According to data, the park was built and governed by the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department of Municipal Corporation of Mumbai. Since open, it has been one of the most popular parks in Mumbai among the local and tourists.

Old Woman’s Shoe - Landmark of Kamala Nehru Park

Inside Kamala Nehru Park stands a single boot, actually it is a building of the shape of boots. The giant shoe brings fame for the park. Therefore, people also call the park Shoe Park. It is said that the structure of Old Woman’s Shoe is inspired by the nursery rhyme called “There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe” and designed by Soli Arceivala, former BMC Environment Officer. In 2018, Old Woman’s Shoe was renovated and opened for public. During daytime, Old Woman’s Shoe is full of children climbing up and down; when it gets dark, Old Woman’s Shoe gives out lights, creating a dreamlike atmosphere as if someone is living in it. This shoe building is extremely popular among children and adults who like fairy tales.

Daily Performances in Kamala Nehru Park

Every day, there are a lot of tourists in the park. When you encounter with a snake charmer, don not be scared, they are friendly to others if you do not hurt them. Usually, snake charmers play piccolo to make rattlesnakes strut and dance; that’s an interesting performance to appreciate. What’s more, family circuses are also performing acrobatics in the corners of park, begging spectators for change. These are rarely seen in other places in the world.

1. Passengers can take bus 103, 106 to Malabar Hill station directly. Then walk to the park.
2. Passengers can take bus 41, 42, 80 LTD, 105, 106, or 108 to get to Kamala Nehru Park station, then walk north for about 5 minutes to get to the destination.
