Things to Know before Travel
Is Mongolia Safe to Travel?
Yes, there’s no need to worry, especially when you have our private guide to escort you all the way. Mongolia is thought to be one of the safest countries in the world. It has a low crime rate, and the police officers are quite friendly to visitors. There are no serious problems, but petty theft may still occur. It is better not to take lots of cash with you when hanging out. Keep the bag in front of you in crowded places. Besides, there are drunkards in cities like Ulaanbaatar at night, so you are advised to return to the hotel early if you hang out alone. Best Time to Visit & Clothes to Pack
Mongolia has more than 200 sunny days throughout the year, with highs of 37℃ (99℉) and lows of -32℃ (-26℉). May to October is the best time to visit this nomadic country when the weather is mild and the sky is clear most of the time. Moreover, the fabulous Nadaam Festival is held in early July, attracting droves of tourists to experience authentic nomadic cultures. The temperature varies widely from day to night on the grassland, so we recommend you dress in layers and pack light clothes and a warm overcoat. If you are going to visit the Gobi desert, sun-protective gear, such as sunglasses and a sun hat, is also necessary. Passport & Visa
Please ensure your passport has at least 6 months' validity. Travelers from 61 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and Italy, can enter Mongolia visa-free. Please check on the official website to see whether you are exempt from a visa. Those who are from countries without Mongolian embassies need to apply for an on-arrival visa, holding pre-arrangement visa approval letters, while others can obtain an e-visa online 1-2 weeks ahead of time. Money & Payment Method
Visa, Master, AMEX, and JCB cards can only be used in large supermarkets, upscale restaurants, and hotels, so Mongolia Tugrik cash is essential for traveling. We suggest you exchange enough cash before leaving Ulaanbaatar for the remote countryside. You can easily find ATMs on the streets, which are more convenient than going to the bank and have a better rate than the airport, USD 1≈MNT 3500. Mobile Internet Access
Most areas in Mongolia have good mobile signals, except for remote valleys and mountain regions. 4G network is reliable in big cities like Ulaanbaatar, where the hotel we selected for you also provides free Wi-Fi, but most rural areas are out of service. Unitel and Mobicom SIM cards are widely used and are available at the airport or in downtown Ulaanbaatar. Generally, Unitel offers 12GB of data for 7 days for USD 3, while Mobicom offers 7GB for USD 2. Adapter & Portable Charger
The standard voltage in Mongolia is 220V at a frequency of 50 Hz, and only Type C and Type E sockets and outlets can be used, so please prepare suitable adapters. 24/7 electricity is only provided at a few ger camps near Ulaanbaatar, but in remote areas, it is only available at certain times of the day. So you are advised to take some portable chargers. Accommodation Conditions
In the cities, we have handpicked 3 and 4-star hotels for you, and of course you can upgrade to 5-star hotels; however, in some rural areas, only traditional ger camps are available. The yurts we select for you are close to or in the attractions, which can save you time for visiting. The ger restaurants usually serve classic Mongolian cuisine and Western food. Please prepare toiletries such as toothpaste and toothbrushes on your own since only towels and bath towels are provided. Besides, if you visit Mongolia from October to May, bathrooms and toilets will not operate because pipes may be frozen. Road Conditions & Vehicles
Most spots are connected by paved roads, but bumpy earthy paths dominate natural parks and reserves, so if you have car sickness, please remember to take Dramamine. Since attractions are far away from each other, it generally takes 2-6 hours to transfer, depending on the road condition and the weather, during which a headrest can help you relieve fatigue. To offer you a comfortable road trip, we will use 4WD Japanese & Korean jeeps, which can better handle various terrains on the steppes. If you want to save time, we can also arrange flights between some destinations instead of land transfers.
