Mongolia Travel Guide

Trip Planning FAQs

Is Mongolia safe to travel?
Yes, there’s no need to worry, as Mongolia is considered one of the safest countries in the world. It has a low crime rate, and the police officers are quite friendly to travelers. There are no serious problems, but petty theft may still occur. It is better not to carry lots of cash with you when hanging out. Keep your bag in front of you in crowded places. In addition, there may be drunkards in Ulaanbaatar at night, so it’s advisable to return to your hotel early if you hang out alone.
When is the best time to visit Mongolia? What should I pack?
May to October is the best time to visit this nomadic country when the weather is mild, and the sky is clear most of the time. Moreover, the fabulous Naadam Festival is held in early July, attracting droves of tourists to experience authentic nomadic cultures. However, Mongolia also offers different experiences in other months, such as the Ice Festival at Khovsgol Lake in February or March.

Mongolia has more than 200 sunny days throughout the year, but the temperatures vary widely from day to night on the grassland, with averages during the best months ranging from 10℃ (50℉) to 25℃ (77℉), so it is better to dress in layers and pack light clothes and a warm overcoat. If you are going to visit the Gobi Desert, sun-protective gear, such as sunglasses and a sun hat, is also necessary. Besides, pack enough warm clothes in winter from November to March, as the temperatures can drop as low as -30℃ (-22℉).
Where will I stay overnight while visiting Mongolia?
In major cities like Ulaanbaatar, you can choose from various star-rated hotels as you wish. However, in the Gobi Desert, steppes, and some rural areas, only traditional ger camps are available. The gers are not as fully equipped as city hotels, usually with only towels and bath towels provided, so please prepare toiletries such as toothpaste and toothbrushes on your own. The ger restaurants usually serve classic Mongolian cuisine and Western food.

Please note that if you visit from October to May, bathrooms and toilets may not operate well because pipes may be frozen. To prepare for this, it is highly recommended to pack a cold-weather hygiene kit. Additionally, you can consider booking premium ger camps, which use heating systems or deep-well water sources to keep their facilities running year-round.
What are the roads like in Mongolia?
The roads in Ulaanbaatar are paved, but narrow and extremely congested. However, a Mongolian road trip offers an ultimate adventure, though the natural steppes and the Gobi Desert are dominated by bumpy earthy tracks left by passing cars, scattered with sand pits and stones. As attractions in Mongolia are far apart, it generally takes a long time to transfer between them. Prepare for a tough yet interesting road journey.

Our Mongolia tour packages offer 4WD Japanese & Korean jeeps, which can better handle various terrains, and you can bring some motion sickness medication and a headrest to help you relieve fatigue.
Is mobile internet accessible in Mongolia?
Most areas in Mongolia have good mobile signal coverage, except for remote steppes, the Gobi Desert, and mountain regions. The 4G network is reliable in big cities like Ulaanbaatar, where the hotel we selected for you also provides free Wi-Fi, but most rural areas are out of service. Unitel and Mobicom SIM cards are widely used and are available at the airport or in downtown Ulaanbaatar. They both offer different data packages ranging from 1 week to 30 days, priced at USD 5-15. You can choose one according to your travel time and data usage requirements.
Is a travel adapter needed for Mongolia tours?
Yes. The standard voltage in Mongolia is 220V at a frequency of 50 Hz, and only Type C and Type E sockets and outlets can be used, so please prepare suitable adapters. 24/7 electricity is only provided at a few ger camps near Ulaanbaatar, but it is only available at certain times of the day in remote areas, so you are advised to take some portable chargers.
