But rainfall in this month is usually sudden and heavy, so raingear is necessary, especially in mountain areas.

As rare as it is, snowfall might occur in June. For example, it suddenly snowed on June 21, 2024, then turned sunny and clear the next day. But don’t worry a lot, since the influence on your sightseeing is limited except that it brings down the temperature to some extent. The snow cover is thin, most on the mountain peaks and hardly seen on the roads as it melts soon.

One of the Best Months for Visiting Mongolia

June is recognized as a good time to visit Mongolia. In despite of the favorable weather, the natural scenery has turned breathtakingly beautiful. For instance:

During this time when the weather of Mongolia is generally warm, the grasslands in most areas have revived green, showing infinite vigor and vitality. You could see horses, cows and sheep walking leisurely and grazing on the grasslands. You can choose to live in the Mongolian yurts to spend one night while enjoying the sunrise and sunset conveniently.

By June, Lake Khovsgol, known as “Blue Pearl of the East”, has presented its most vibrant and luxuriant appearance. As the high temperature in Northern Mongolia goes above 20℃ (℉) and the low around 8℃ (℉), its thick ice has completely melted into gently running waters, and the trees by the lakeside have turned lush and green. When the sun shines on the sapphire-like lake, the waves ripple and sparkle, making visitors indulged in the magnificent view and lose track of time.

What to Bring if Visit Mongolia in June?

Upper body: Considering the large temperature range, tops of different thickness and functions are suggested, including T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sunscreen coats, jackets and trench coats. It will be perfect if the thin clothes are made of cotton and flax, better with light colors since they are more breathable and resist more sunlight.

Lower body: For the lower body, you can choose from dresses, thin summer trousers and loose sweatpants. And a pair of long johns is possibly in need, helping you deal with the sudden temperature drops.

Shoes: You can wear comfortable sneakers and casual shoes with thin socks, of which non-slip ones will be better. Rain boots are perfect for the muddy and slippery grassland after rain.

Others: As the UV index has reached a very high level, sunscreen products like sunglasses, sunhats and sunscreen cream are essential to protect you from sunburn. An umbrella should be prepared too, not only used for rainfall but also to prevent strong sunlight around noon.

Tip: If your destination is Lake Khovsgol or any other scenic spots located in Northern Mongolia where the temperature is pretty low in night, your clothes should be thicker than the above mentioned, such as thin down coats and fleece-lined jeans.

Travel Recommendation and Tips for Mongolia in June

1. There are many grasslands in different parts of Mongolia for visitors to enjoy, for example Bayan Ulgii in Western Mongolia and Karakorum in Central Mongolia. Of them, Terelj National Park near Ulaanbaatar is the top recommendation since it consists of grassland, forest, river and mountains. Meanwhile, it is well equipped and easier to be reached, taking only about 2 hours to arrive from Ulaanbaatar.
2. Shaman Festival 2026 will be celebrated in Ulaanbaatar from June 12 to 15. During this period, people from Shaman tribes in Mongolia will wear their unique clothes and give fantastic performances including singing ancient mantras, dancing and playing the drums. If you are interested in this characteristic culture, please schedule your trip and spend one day experiencing it.

3. Though the climate of Mongolia in June gets warm even hot during daytime, the night remains pretty cool, especially in grassland and mountain areas. The Mongolia yurts are heated by burning coals or cow dungs and you might need to complement them in midnight to keep the yurt consistently warm the whole night. If you are unable to accept the smell of burning or the inconvenience, you had better not choose to live in the yurts.
