Best Time to Visit Mongolia

July is regarded as the best time to visit Mongolia, not only because the climate of Mongolia in July is pleasant with moderate temperature and abundant sunlight, but also because July has the most luxuriant grassland as well as the most important and grandest festival in Mongolia - Naadam Festival.

Travel Highlight of Mongolia in July - Naadam Festival

Naadam Festival is held to celebrate the harvest usually in July or August when the livestock are well-fed and robust. In 2026, it will start on July 11 and last for 5 days to July 15. During this period, you can enjoy Mongolian costume parade as well as traditional singing and dancing performances to experience the festive atmosphere. What’s more, exciting and wonderful competitions also attract many visitors. Of so many competitions, the traditional and representative matches of wrestling, horse racing and archery are the most excellent and unmissable ones.

Notes on Participating in Naadam Festival

1. Since Naadam Festival enjoys great popularity among visitors, they will crowd into Mongolia to engage in such a grand event. In this busy tourism period, the hotel rooms and tickets for trains and flights will be in demand, and the price will be also unprecedently high. So, you are suggested to set down your schedule earlier in order to book related tickets and hotels in advance.
2. The ticket for opening ceremony of Naadam Festival is the hardest one to get and it will be sold on the official website about a week earlier. You had better keep an eye on the selling time.
3. There are so many various competitions that you might be unable to watch all of them. Different competitions are held in different places, for instance in 2025, the horse racing was held in the suburb of Ulaanbaatar and the archery near the National Sports Stadium. It is advisable to choose several contests you are most interested in, and further check their holding time and locations as well as if they need specific tickets or not.
4. Traffic jam is commonly seen in Ulaanbaatar and it will be extremely serious during Naadam Festival. It might take a whole night to drive to Terelj National Park which is only about 70km (44 mi) far away from Ulaanbaatar. Therefore, you should consider the extra time spent on the transportation and leave ample time for the next destination or scenic spot in case that you fail to arrive there in time.
5. If you tend to engage in Naadam Festival, but at the same time, you also want to avoid the crowds and higher prices, those Naadam Festivals held in different parts of Mongolia are suggested. Though the scale is smaller than that of the national one, they are of more local characteristics, like camel contest and yak contest. The specific dates in 2026, usually in July and August, are not set down yet and you need to pay close attention to.

What to Bring if Visit Mongolia in July?

Upper body: You can wear T-shirts alone indoors around noon and one more thin sunscreen coat outdoors. Breathable ones of light colors are more suggested. In the early morning and late evening when the temperature is lower, blouses and jackets should be worn for the outer layer.

Lower body: There are multiple choices for the lower body, such as shorts, skirts, dresses and sweatpants. But for the grassland, you had better wear long loose trousers since there are mosquitos and bugs everywhere. To take beautiful pictures, you can wear the dresses or skirts on the grassland for a while and put on your trousers after that.

Shoes: Comfortable sneakers and non-slip shoes with thin socks are good choices. Rain boots are necessary on or after the rainy days on the grassland. Casual non-slip shoes are enough to deal with rainfall in cities.

Others: Considering the very high UV index, it is suggested to prepare sunglasses, sunscreen hats and cream. Mosquito repellent patches are also important for visitors to have fun on the grassland.
