Karakorum Weather in October

With the end of autumn and approaching of winter, Karakorum weather in October gets increasingly cold, even frigid in some days when temperature drops occur. As the rainy season completely past over, the precipitation is fairly low and brings Karakorum a dry climate. Both rain and snow are possible in this month, so snow scenery might be available. Visitors still can appreciate golden autumn scenery in early October.

Temperatures in October drop significantly, seeing the daily highs fluctuating between 1 and 10 degrees Celsius (34 - 50 degrees Fahrenheit) and low degrees ranging from -14 to -4°C (7 - 25°F). Karakorum climate in October is so cold that visitors could easily gain a red nose and painful ears after stepping out of warm rooms for minutes if without special protection.

The situation is further intensified by occasional temperature drops. In coldest days in October, the maximum temperature swings only around -8°C (17°F) and the minimum one falls to -20°C (-4°F) even lower, making outdoor activities challenging. But this extreme situation is very occasional.

Low Precipitation with Highly Possible Snowfall

Karakorum gets only 10mm (0.39 in) monthly precipitation from 6 days on average, a very low level no matter compared with itself or most worldwide destinations, thus the climate of Karakorum in October is pretty dry. The skin gets easily dry, itchy and chapping, especially lips and hands.

The precipitation mostly falls in forms of rain or snow, which are usually light and short-time. Snow drizzles have limited terrible impact on your journey; on the contrary, they could add more charm to both natural and cultural scenery. However, when heavy snow occurs, though rarely in this month, cars tend to skid on the muddy roads with accumulated uncleaned snow.

Ample Sunlight Hours

In October in Karakorum, the sun usually rises at 07:04 - 07:47 and sets at 17:55 - 18:50. Therefore, the daytime becomes relatively short from 11h45m at the beginning of October to 10h8m on the last day. If planning to visit many attractions in one day, you are suggested to speed up your steps.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Karakorum?

Generally speaking, October is not a typically good time to visit Karakorum, especially late October for the following reasons. Due to the increasingly low temperatures, you may need to get back cars or indoors to keep warm after staying outside for dozens of minutes, thus making the already insufficient sightseeing time even shorter. For natural scenery, grassland starts to turn barren, brown and grey in middle October and Orkhon Waterfall is in its low-flow period. The travel experience might fail to meet your expectations.

However, if your spare time is constricted to October 2026, visiting Karakorum in early October is actually a good choice. Early October still allows visitors to conduct outdoor activities as usual if wearing thick enough clothes. In addition, the trees haven’t turned completely brown yet at the beginning of October, keeping golden and sparkling under sunshine. When encountering snowfall, it presents a stunning picture painted by yellow leaves, white snow and azure sky.

What to Wear in October in Karakorum?

Karakorum October Clothes
Upper body: Three-layer dressing should be adopted in Karakorum during October. Bottoming shirts are good choices for the inner layer. Then, you can wear thick shirts, hoodies or sweaters to preserve heat. For outer layer, padded leather coats, down jackets and 3-in-1 windbreakers are most suggested since they are windproof and thick enough.

Lower body: Normal trousers with long johns can deal with the low temperatures in most time. But when cold air visits, you need to change them into padded jeans or fleece-lined sweatpants to keep warm.

Shoes: Casual shoes like walking boots, sneakers and leather shoes with socks of different thickness are good matches. But considering the significant temperature drops, at least one pair of padded shoes should be prepared.

Others: Scarves, gloves and hats become necessary to prevent heat loss from your neck, hands and head. Be sure that your hats are thick enough such as those made of wool and cotton. Besides, it is suggested to pack skin-products including body lotion and facial masks. You had better bring lip pomades and hand cream with you so as to use them whenever you find it necessary.
