Vietnam Weather in July

In July, Vietnam is immersed in the unique rhythm of the tropical rainy climate: the sultry feeling is intense, and the rain is frequent but not lingering, mostly sudden downpours. Typhoons may occasionally occur. However, the plus side is that there are less tourists than in the dry season, and this tranquility becomes a travel bonus exclusive to this time.

Stuffy and Hot like Sauna Rooms

July is one of the hottest months in Vietnam and the scorching weather conditions discourage your outings.

In the north like Hanoi, the daily highs in July are between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius (90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit), with extreme highs hitting 42℃ (108℉), while the daily lows range from 25 to 29℃ (77 to 84℉). When you reach the southern part, cities like Ho Chi Minh City also experience continuous high temperatures. During the day, the temperature ranges from 32 to 35℃ (90 to 95℉), while at night, it is between 25 and 27℃ (77 to 81℉).

Although the temperatures seem relatively low in the mornings and evenings, don’t expect these periods to be cool: the high humidity brought by the oceanic monsoon lingers in the air, making the apparent temperature even higher. Mornings and evenings leave your skin coated in a sticky dampness, far from refreshing; by midday, it’s like stepping into a sauna room, with thick, oppressive heat closing in.

Frequent Short-lived Showers

Average precipitation: 223mm from 16 rainy days

In July, most areas in Vietnam experience frequent rainfall, accompanied by the possible impact of typhoons, resulting in the highest precipitation of the whole year. For instance, in Hanoi, the average monthly rainfall is 288mm with 16 rainy days, while in Ho Chi Minh City, it is 294mm with 23 rainy days. Fortunately, most of the rain is short-lived showers that come and go quickly. Plan your itinerary flexibly by taking shelter at a roadside coffee shop for a beverage while waiting for the rain to subside, then resume your tour once conditions improve.

Of course, there are exceptions. Nha Trang is surrounded by mountains on three sides, which prevent most moist air from the sea entering. As a result, its rainfall is significantly less than that of other places. In July, the rainfall does not exceed 10mm and there are only 11 rainy days. Such weather conditions are unlikely to have a significant impact on your travel plans.

Intense Ultraviolet Rays

Although Vietnam is in the rainy season in July, the intensity of ultraviolet rays should not be underestimated. On sunny days when the sun is shining directly, it can soar to an extreme intensity of level 12. Such ultraviolet rays are extremely powerful and can cause the skin to redden and peel within just hours, resulting in obvious damage. Therefore, when going out, it is essential to take full sun protection measures.

Off-Season with Low Costs

In July, most areas of Vietnam experience high temperatures and lots of rainfall, making it a low tourist season. However, this period also presents certain advantages. “Low cost” becomes the core highlight. Hotel and flight prices dropped by 20% to 40% compared to the peak season, offering excellent cost performance. In addition, the number of tourists decreases significantly, so there are no long queues at popular attractions anymore. You can enjoy your sightseeing at a leisurely pace.

Packing List for Visiting Vietnam in July

Clothes: For the muggy climate of Vietnam in July, it is recommended to bring light and breathable clothes, such as T-shirts, tank tops, light trousers, shorts, dresses and skirts.

Shoes: Considering the high rainfall, sports sandals, flip flops, or water-wading hiking shoes are optimal.

Others:
1. In humid environments, mosquitoes thrive and can easily spread dengue fever. Therefore, it is essential to carry mosquito repellent.
2. Apart from umbrellas and raincoats, don’t forget to bring sunscreen, parasols, etc.
3. Some attractions, such as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Tran Quoc Pagoda, prohibit wearing tank tops, halter tops or shorts. Even if you want to stay cool, it is recommended to wear lightweight long pants and prepare a long-sleeved shirt as a backup.

Travel Tips

1. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities at noon in July: during this period, the sun’s rays are the strongest, making it very easy to get sunburned and potentially causing heatstroke. Even if you carry a portable fan with you, the cooling effect is very limited, and you often need to constantly replenish ice water to barely maintain a sense of coolness.

2. Shopping malls, coffee shops and other indoor spots often have strong air conditioning, creating a stark temperature contrast with the outdoors. To avoid catching a cold from the drastic temperature changes, it’s better to keep a light jacket handy.

3. After rain, try to avoid waterlogged areas when traveling, and stay alert for hidden potholes or manhole covers underwater to prevent accidents.

4. If you have any plan to visit Da Lat in July 2026, it’s recommended not to miss Datanla Falls, which is 10km (6 miles) from Da Lat downtown. The rainy season brings abundant water volume, making the waterfall much more spectacular than in the dry season.
