Clothes and shoes: Hiroshima climate is cold in January, so you need to wear thick clothes like sweater, thick overcoats, thick jackets, downcoats and winter pants. Moreover, there is a large temperature difference between indoors and outdoors because of the work of air condition, so it is recommended to bring clothes that are easy to be put on and taken off. As for shoes, you may need thicker sneakers or boots. If it snows and the road is slippery, you’d better wear snow boots to keep you warm and safe.

1. Miyajima Island

If you visit the island on January 1, 2025, the New Year, you will meet many Japanese visiting the shrine to pray for safety and good luck for the coming year. If you are interested, you can also pray, and there will be Omamori, a kind of amulet in Japan, for sale. Moreover, you may encounter traditional dance and music performances here. What should be mentioned is that, on that day, the shrine will be crowded and you may need to wait in line.
Tip: There is a tide timetable at the entrance to the shrine, which will give you references if you want to walk under the torii gate at low tide and enjoy it up close.
2. Atomic Bomb Dome
The quiet and solemn atmosphere and less crowds make winter a suitable season to visit the Atomic Bomb Dome, one of the a few surviving buildings near the center of the explosion of the atomic bomb. The site was originally a domed building, and only the main structure was partially preserved after the explosion in 1945. In 1996, the site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, becoming a symbol of yearning for permanent peace.

3. Takataniyama
In January, the phenomenon of a sea of clouds occurs almost every day in Takataniyama. Standing on the Takataniyama Viewing Platform, you can see the vast sea of clouds. If you make it to the top of the mountain before sunrise, you will also see the sun rising over the clouds. Also, there may be snow on the mountain in January. All of these make up a white world. If you plan to visit Takataniyama to see the spectacular sea of clouds, remember to check the weather conditions in advance.
