Shizuoka in February

Season: Winter
What’s the weather of Shizuoka like in February: Not very cold; low rainfall

Not Very Cold

Average Temperature: 3-13℃ (37-55℉)

Shizuoka in February enjoys higher temperatures compared to other regions of Honshu. Daytime temperatures often range from 10-16℃ (50-61℉), and you even feel warm when the sunlight shines upon you at noon. The comparatively higher temperature also contributes to the earlier bloom of Sakura: early February falls within the best time to enjoy Atami cherry blossoms. Around mid-February, Kawazu cherry flowers burst into bloom.

However, after sunset, the temperature usually decreases by more than 10℃ (50℉) - at around 0-6 degrees Celsius (32-43 degrees Fahrenheit). Plus, coastal regions are windy, resulting in lower perceived temperature. Thus, don’t forget to dress warmly, if you have an outing trip at night or to the seaside.

Low Rainfall

Average precipitation: 98 mm (3.9 in)
Average wet days: around 11 days

The total precipitation of Shizuoka is low in February, characterized by light rain. It often rains for a short time but sometimes intermittently within a single day. Based on the past three years’ records, it may also rain from morning till night for 2 or 3 days. The prefecture seldom sees snowfall, and even when it does, it tends to occur only in a small area. In February of 2025, it only snowed for a while in Hamamatsu City, and the snowflakes were relatively small and melted soon.

The humidity in February averages 62%, so you feel neither very dry nor humid.

Daylength & Sunlight Hours

Sunrise Time: 06:19 - 06:48
Sunset Time: 17:17 - 17:44
Daylength: 10 hours 29 minutes - 11 hours 25 minutes
Sunlight Hours: around 6.6 hours on average per day
Though daylight hours are getting longer as the month progresses, you still need to make a tight schedule, since tourist attractions in Shizuoka are scattered and it takes much time to get from one site to another. You are also advised to check the time table of trains or buses when making travel plans as their frequency is low, to avoid wasting time waiting boringly at train station or bus stop.

Thanks to low rainfall, there are lots of sunny days in February, bringing abundant sunlight hours and offering more opportunities to clearly view the snowcapped Mount Fuji.

Daily Outfits for Shizuoka Trip in February

Clothes: Considering Shizuoka’s climate in February, you need to wear several layers: start with a thin sweater or a cardigan plus a long-sleeved shirt underneath, and then wear a 3-in-1 jacket with a detachable fleece liner on top. You can take off the fleece or outer layer to cope with temperature variations. All medium-thickness pants are good choices.

Shoes: Despite convenient transportation, some scenic spots still require a long walk. Thus, choose comfy shoes such as sneakers or walking shoes, coupled with high-ankle socks.

 Others:
1. Bring along a beanie and scarf, both of which are very useful particularly when you stay at the seaside.
2. In the case of rain, remember to take a compact umbrella or a light raincoat.
3. Carry a thermal cup and regularly drink warm water to ward off the cold.
