What to Wear and Take to Visit Kenya in August

Kenya August Clothes
Tops: During the daytime, a comfortable cotton short-sleeve T-shirt is good; add a thin overcoat when going out so as to protect you from sunburn. Nights in August are slightly cold, so you may wear a long-sleeve T-shirt, a blouse or a thin knitwear; a thin overcoat, a windbreaker or a leather jacket is necessary in case you go somewhere with high altitude. Brightly colored dresses and beach-styled shirts are essential for a beach vacation.

Bottoms: You can wear shorts, a skirt or a dress at daytime, while a pair of light pants and jeans would be better for the cool night, as well as for safari. Sandals and casual shoes are good choices for city trips and beach sites. And comfortable sneakers and walking shoes are essential for a safari.

Accessories: Sun protections and sun screams are necessities when you go on a safari. When you go to places with poor road conditions like Lake Bogoria, take masks to protect you from heavy dust.

Tip: To avoid irritating the animals, light-colored clothes are highly recommended.

Ideal Places to Go and Key Event in August

Tourism Rate:

1. Great Migration

In the vast African savannah, the migration of animals occurs all year round. However, the most classic and spectacular scenes happen usually along the Mara River in July and August in Kenya. You can see tens of thousands of zebras, wildebeest and gazelles forming a mighty migration team and crossing across the river, with crocodiles waiting to prey on them at the bottom of the river, which is called the “Mara River Crossing”.

It should be noted that due to climate changes, the timing of the Great Migration is increasingly changeable, and the probable timing of the most spectacular “Mara River Crossing” in 2025 will be July - October. Even then, it does not happen every day or at a fixed time, so you need to be patient.

2. Lake Bogoria

Every year from July to September, Lake Bogoria welcomes millions of flamingos migrating from Lake Natron, so August is no doubt one of the best months to see this grand view. What’s more, it is said nearly a third of the world’s flamingos are found here, making this pink-colored wonderland definitely a must-visit for photography enthusiasts.

Due to the abundance of geothermal energy nearby, the overall temperature of the lake is pulled up, so it is recommended to bring sun protection.

3. Maralal Camel Derby

Annually held in late August or early September in Malaral, the Maralal Camel Derby is one of the biggest cultural events in Kenya, where you can experience the unique nomadic culture of northern Kenya and the lifestyle of the local Samburu minority. Not only professional players can participate, but visitors can also rent a camel to experience the fun of the race.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, after a three-year suspension, the game returned to the public on October 5, 2023.
