What to Wear and Pack

Tanzania July Clothes

Tops:
In the daytime, it is recommended to wear lightweight, breathable cotton clothing. A combination of a tank top or a short-sleeve T-shirt and a piece of sunscreen clothing is practical. Bring as many as tank tops and short sleeves because you may need to change them every day. Cardigans, a hardshell jacket or a slightly thicker hoodie are necessary, too. On cooler nights and early mornings, you may need to wear them. A heavy coat or a light down jacket may be needed in place like Ngorogoro. When you go to the coastal areas, T-shirts and dresses are enough.

Bottoms: For safari, thin, lightweight pants are the best. Shorts are not recommended, because you might easily be bitten by flies. And for the island trip, a beautiful skirt or shorts are suitable.

Shoes: Light and comfortable sports shoes are fine. You’ll be in the off-drive vehicle for a long time during the safari, so take a pair of slippers. When you go to the island, you can wear beach sandals or flip-flops.

Accessories: It will be very dusty during safari, so it’s better to bring wipes, breathable disposable masks and wind goggles. The sun is strong during the daytime, so a hat with a string and sunglasses must be taken. As most animals are far away from the vehicle, be sure to bring binoculars.

Getting to Serengeti National Park

1. Northern and Central Serengeti

In July, millions of wild animals have reached the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. The famous “Mara River Crossing” takes place here during this time. Moreover, the “Grumiti River Crossing” is on show in the central Serengeti. This is the very month you have chances to see both crossings. In addition to these breathtaking river crossings, lions’ perching in the bush, cheetahs’ hunting and elephants’ walking slowly near you are all the highlights of the Serengeti in July.

In order to admire both river crossings and predators’ hunting, you’d better find an experienced guide and get to the best spots ahead of time with binoculars.

2. Ngorongoro Conservation Area

With rich topography and unique environment, the Ngorongoro crater allows tens of thousands of large animals to live all year round and they do not need to migrate largely. As large herds of animals gather at the water sources of Lake Empakaai and Lake Ndutu in July, this month is a good time to observe animals, such as lions, ostriches, hippos, spotted hyenas, warthogs, wildebeest and zebras there. It is important to note that the unique crater landscape is prone to fog, so patience is required in finding animals.

3. Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar Island can’t be missed when going to Tanzania in dry season. There are many beaches on the island. Nungwi is the most famous one, with the most complete facilities. The northern beach is suitable for swimming and snorkeling, as well as chasing dolphins and whales. If you prefer a quieter one, Paje beach in the east is your best choice. In addition to the beaches, you can also pay a visit to the Stone City, the Slave Museum and Freddie Mercury Museum, as well as to the spice garden for a spice tour.
