1. Climbing Mt. Fuji

Every year in July, the trails leading to the crater of Mount Fuji are opened to public for two months. It is alluring to mountaineering enthusiasts from the world. Trekkers can make a reservation or registration in advance and climb onto the summit along the corresponding trail. The most popular and classic route, Yoshida Trail, starts from Mt. Fuji 5th Station, where can be reached by bus from Lake Kawaguchi. After reaching the summit, it would be delightful to see the rare beauty, and those who are able to continue can hike along the circuit around the crater.

Tips: Yoshida Trail is the route that easiest to access from Tokyo downtown. There are direct buses to Mt. Fuji 5th Station from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal, but quite few.
Don’t stagger on if encountering a bad weather on the mountain, like raining, sleeting or hailing.

2. Sumida River Fireworks Show

When talking about the summer in Japan, the fireworks must be the most expectant thing. The Sumida River Fireworks Show is the biggest fireworks show in Tokyo and it’s also the most popular one. It has a history of 290 years and it is the closest fireworks show to the center of Tokyo. It is held on last Saturday in every July and the fireworks are innovated every year. Visitors can put on the yukata, a kimono made of thin material, to enjoy this marvelous show.


Tip: The best place to watch the fireworks show is on the riverside of Sumida River and it’s usually super crowded. Please watch out the stampede and take care of your belongings.

3. Tanabata Festival 2025

Besides the fireworks shows, July has another romantic activity which named Tanabata Festival. It will be celebrated on 7th July in 2025. During this period, there are many Tanabata decorations and lanterns on the streets and the whole Tokyo is full of romantic atmosphere. It’s a day to pray for blessings, so you can join the "Tanabata Prayer Festival" which is held in Tokyo Daijingu Shrine to write down your wish on the corresponding slip of paper and tie it on the bamboo trees there.

3. Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or more water sports on the sea. Kamakura and Izu Peninsula provide the best beaches near Tokyo, while some offshore islands like Oshima and Niijima are also good destinations in hot climate.
