June is the beginning of the plum rainy season in Tokyo, which lasts until mid-late July. The rainy season usually starts in the middle of June sooner or later, as early as around June 8 or as late as about June 22. The rainfall sharply increases, and you may encounter the continuous rains for a few consecutive days every week. Although it rains lightly, it is unlikely to stop easily. Even it’s not raining someday, it is often cloudy or overcast. If you want to travel in Tokyo in June, it is more advisable to visit indoor attractions, such as Tokyo National Museum.

June can be considered as a good time in Tokyo if you would like a budget tour and don't mind the trouble of traveling in the rain. It is a low season in Tokyo, so it’s relatively cheaper. Meanwhile, it’s not raining all the time, and there are some nice days from time to time. It hasn’t been very hot yet in the rainy season.

For the high temperature, short sleeve clothes must be good choices and clothes should be breathable to dissipate heat. However, the temperature may drop slightly after a rainfall and most of the indoor places are air conditioned, so a thin overcoat is needed to cope with temperature changes.

Girls

Tops: Girls can choose short-sleeve shirt or long dress in June. But as it’s a rainy season, a thin coat like sun-proof clothing is also important occasionally in order to keep warm.
Bottoms & shoes: Skirt, shorts or light pants are all suitable to the weather. It is more advisable to wear light pants if it is raining or you mainly go to indoor places with air-conditioners. Besides, a pair of casual shoes is a good choice too.

1. Shinagawa Aquarium

If you travel to Tokyo with your kids, you must not miss the Shinagawa Aquarium. Near the Omori Coast, the Shinagawa Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums in Japan and there are about 450 species of marine animals including turtles and rays. 3. Ghibli Museum

Ghibli Museum designed by Hayao Miyazaki (a famous animator in Japan) is another good place for indoor entertainment. The whole building is surrounded by green vines which brings coolness in the hot weather. It has four different floors and each floor shows different steps of animation production. The -1 floor offers a small theater to play Ghibli original animated shorts and an exhibition area to show the visitors how to make animation movies. The 1st floor reproduces studio scenes and the 2nd floor has special areas for children and a Ghibli souvenir shop. Standing on the rooftop, visitors can take pictures with reproduced statue of Robot Solider from Hayao Miyazaki’s movie. This place can help you have a better understanding about Hayao Miyazaki’s works without doubt.

4. Torigoe Shrine - Torigoe Festival in 2026

In early June, Torigoe Shrine holds the Torigoe Festival to eliminate bad luck and disasters for people. It is said to be the festival that best embodies the civilians’ life of Tokyo. During the festival, about two hundred strong men lift up a mikoshi weighing nearly four tons and parade nearby the Torigoe Shrine. At night, the procession, with mikoshi hanging lighted lanterns, go back to the shrine. It is a good choice for visitors to experience the Tokyo civilians’ life. It is held in the weekend closest to June 9th, and it was on June 6-9th, 2025.
