The temperature ranges around 5-10℃ (41-50℉) averagely. The historical data shows that the temperature in February is in a rising trend. Coupled with the mild winters in recent years, it can sometimes be as warm as spring in Tokyo at the end of February. However, thick clothes are still needed when travel in this month.

In February, thick clothes are necessary. But considering the indoor heating system, the outer wears which are easy to be taken off are highly recommended.

Special in February – Early Cherry Blossoms

Tokyo is a great place to see early cherry blossoms in February, and Kawazu on Izu Peninsula is the best and most popular site of sakura throughout this month. Kawazu can be reached in about 2.5h by limited express train Odoriko from Tokyo Station, and you can see full-bloom sakura when getting off the train. Cherry blossoms extend from Kawazu Station to the banks of Kawazu River, which offers a grand feast of natural beauty in February, let alone snack stalls roadsides.

In the second half of February, there are also some places to see early cherry blossoms in downtown Tokyo. Old Nakagawa River is beautiful to get cherry blossoms and towering Tokyo Skytree in a picture. On Fureai Bridge, you can see the blossoms on the eastern bank, and Tokyo Skytree not far away. Moreover, there is a grove of early sakura in Kiba Park, which is also a stunning site in Tokyo.

Although February in Tokyo is cold, it’s a good time to appreciate the plum blossoms. Here are three recommended places to take part in the plum blossom festival and appreciate the flowers:


1. The Setagaya Plum Blossom Festival makes Hanegi Park the hottest place to appreciate the plum blossoms within the main city area of Tokyo. Visitors can appreciate more than 650 plum blossom trees of more than 60 varieties in the same time. According to the celebration dates in the past years, in 2026, it may also be celebrated between mid-February and early March.

2. Yushima Tenmangu Shrine has been a famous spot to appreciate the plum blossoms since the Edo period (1603-1868AD). Therefore, the Bunkyo-ku Plum Blossom Festival held here is absolutely lively. Visitors can not only appreciate about 300 plum blossoms of 20 different varieties here, but also enjoy activities like artistic performances and concerts. Every year, it is held from the early February to early March.

3. Kyodonomori Park, where The Fuchu Kyodo no Mori Plum Festival takes place, is also one of the most popular spots to see the plum blossoms, in Fuchu City, western outskirt of Tokyo. There are 60 species and 1,100 plum trees in the park and there are various entertainment facilities in the park, too.

Setsubun Festival

Setsubun Festival is usually on February 3rd every year and it is the most famous activity happening in February in Tokyo. On that day, people throw beans at the person who plays ghost, to drive away evil spirits and pray for good luck. Another custom is to eat a kind of special sushi rolls, called eho-maki. The eho-maki is longer than the usual sushi rolls and it has the good meaning of longevity. If you want to enjoy the festive atmosphere to welcome the spring or pray for the future, go to the Sensoji Temple or Zojoji Temple in Tokyo downtown, or Ookunitama-jinja Shrine in Fuchu.

Hot Spring Bath - Tokyo Somei Onsen SAKURA & Thermae Yu 

February is a good time to enjoy the hot spring bath, called onsen in Japanese. Visitors can choose to go for a bath in the Tokyo Somei Onsen SAKURA or the Thermae Yu – both public hot springs. The water of most natural hot spring is very turbid but in Tokyo Somei Onsen SAKURA, the water is clean and clear. Bathing in the pools, visitors can get relaxed both physically and mentally. The Thermae Yu is located in the center of Shinjuku which is near to the Kabukicho, an entertainment district. If you happen to be around Kabukicho at night, don’t forget to take a relaxing bath in the Thermae Yu.
