Considering the climate of Antananarivo in April, you mainly need to pack some summer clothes, such as cotton T-shirts, light
blouses, dresses, causal pants, and shorts. The large temperature difference during a day in Antananarivo, where the weather is also colder than other parts of Madagascar for its high altitude, requires you to take some thicker clothes like jackets, light sweaters, or trench coats to wear in the evening.

As for shoes, you are advised to pack comfortable sneakers and flats. It’s also recommended to take a pair of worn-out shoes to wear when you visit the national parks or walk past some dirt road.

Reasons for Traveling to Antananarivo in April:

1. April is the shoulder season in Antananarivo, so there are fewer tourists than other peak months and the prices of hotels and flights have not risen yet.

2. The dry season has just started in April. Therefore, it’s a good time to visit the natural parks and reserves since they’re all in their best conditions with flourishing tropical plants and dry soil paths to walk on.

Best Things to Do While Visiting Antananarivo in April:

Tourism rate:

1. Rova-Queen’s Palace

The Rova-Queen’s Palace is a must-visit attraction in Antananarivo and April is fine for a visit here; just choose a clear sunny day. It overlooks the whole Antananarivo City. At the beginning, the palace is made of padauk. After the invasion of the French, the wooden construction was rebuilt with granite of Baroque style. The giant walls and windows are basically the only remaining original parts of the building, because the fire in 1995 made everything in the palace needs to be repaired. Now, it is open to the public except for the royal cemeteries inside.

2. Attend Easter at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Andohalo

The Easter falls on April 20th, 2025. This is the most important western festival in Madagascar, so visiting local cathedrals in April will be a special experience. The cathedral is situated on the central highland of the city, close to Rova-Queen’s Palace. It is splendid with yellow bricks, colorful windows, and a tall statue of Mother Mary overlooking the city of Antananarivo below. When Easter comes, believers in the city will gather in the church to attend the prayer.

3. Tsarasaotra Park

To visit Tsarasaotra Park in April just after the rainy season, you can avoid the muddy road but enjoy the lush vegetation. Located in the north of Antananarivo, Tsarasaotra Park is a refuge for local endangered birds and a wonderful place for photographers to watch and take pictures of birds. As a matter of fact, the park’s name “Tsarasaotra” means “birds’ island”. It also accommodates several lakes for birds to drink and swim.
